About this deal

There isn’t any information on where Thorogood sources their leather, but I can attest that the most popular version of the Moc Toe, the Tobacco leather color, is also tough and doesn’t require much maintenance. While you can wear these as part of a rugged workwear inspired outfit, I’m going to gear this review more toward the guys who need a sturdy pair of work boots. Moc Toe Boots are daily-wear boots for so many jobs, particularly those that require high quality shoes that are noticeably comfortable, while still being developed with durability in mind. Moc Toe Boots can be a great fit for electricians, plumbers, concrete workers, carpenters, construction workers, and much more. The best moc toe is the Brass Boot from Grant Stone. This is an enhanced moc toe, a moc toe plus — let me tell you why this boot is just a bit better than all the others on the market. Their flagship boot is the Birdshooter, which you can customize in myriad ways. Trudging through marshes hunting game fowl? You can get a South 40 Birdshooter made with a triple vamp, meaning you’ll get threelayers of leather surrounding your foot. Bow hunting caribou on a frosty tundra? Get Birdshooters with up to 400 grams of Thinsulate insulation to keep you toasty warm.

Despite both being called 6-inch boots, the Thorogoods are taller boots, with a top eyelet after the speed hooks to give you more support and prevent the laces from falling out of the speed hooks. (I don’t use the eyelet and just lace up to the top speed hook.)

Thorogood Story

Thorogood offers some wide sizes (and even a few narrow sizes), but they’re not quite as comprehensive as Red Wing. This isn’t true for all moc toe boots, but generally speaking, you’ll have more vertical room in the toe, which is fantastic if you’re kneeling often or very active and on your feet all day. What are Moc Toe Boots Good For? Below is a look at my used pair of Thorogood American Heritage boots. As you can see, the seams have held up well and the boot itself still holds its shape.

I have worn both boots in wet weather with no issues, although I have not had the boots submerged in water for extended periods of time. When comparing the two kinds of construction, stitchdown is considered more water resistant than a storm welt, but the difference isn’t very significant and neither boot is waterproof. The more important note is that the stitchdown is more flexible, but it’s a tad harder to find a cobbler to resole it and it can’t be resoled as many times. Work boots either help you run the day, or allow the day to run you. Built for the rain or shine, we’ve crafted quality boots SINCE 1892. When long days arrive, or problems attempt to take the reins, you can trust that Thorogood boots are supporting you every step of the way. While the Indy may not reach the purists’ standard of a moccasin style boot, given the toe stitching is decorative rather than holding two pieces of leather together, we’re still including this because, well, Alden is universally considered as the makers of some of the best boots on Earth… and because Indiana Jones wears them in all of his movies. Despite the costume designer assigning the character Red Wings, Harrison Ford insisted on Alden, his go-to work boots while he was a carpenter trying to get his acting career off the ground. That said, I wouldn’t trust the Thursday Diplomat under harsh conditions as much as I trust my Thorogood Moc Toe. So yes, you’re reading that correctly: all other moc toes are imitators. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the imitation isn’t just as good (or better) than the original. The Thorogood Moc Toe features a 360-degree Storm welt, which is a type of Goodyear welt. The brand likely uses a synthetic welt, which helps cut down on cost and weight. While these boots aren’t technically waterproof, the Storm Goodyear welt gets them pretty dang close.

If you’re not a patient man you can skip this section, but if you don’t mind waiting for quality, well, I couldn’t finish a list of the best moccasin-style boots without mentioning Russell, a company that made its name on high end moc toe boots and has been producing stellar products in Wisconsin since 1898. Alden has been making boots in New England since the 19th century, and as you can see, this is not a chunky work boot like the average moc toe. The brand has a history of developing orthopedic footwear, so the last is famously comfortable and anatomically correct. Many of the brand’s faithful customers only buy Alden boots because they find it helps to remedy foot pain. (This, of course, isn’t medical advice!) I think both boots look great, but speaking aesthetically, I prefer the look of the Danners. They are just simpler looking, with less stitching that’s colored more subtly. These are also leather lined for extra comfort, which is yet another reason the price is bonkers because I’ve made boots by hand before and leather lining really does add a significant amount of extra work to the process.

The first thing that stands out is the shape—it’s made with a classic Moc Toe construction, which has a u-shaped piping detail running at the top of the toe box. The biggest issue I have with the Danners is the tongue. It uses the same oiled leather as the rest of the upper and if I lace them up too tight, I get lace bite: the front of my ankle gets irritated from the pressure because the tongue isn’t very padded or substantial. (I am planning on changing out the laces to help with that.) Style is a subjective thing, but I think the Red Wing is a more stylish boot given its more contoured design.

Customer reviews

But because it’s such a popular boot, it comes in over half a dozen other leathers: several Chromexcels, America’s most beloved boot leather; a vegetable tanned leather (“Tan Essex”) from Chicago’s Horween Tannery, and the very famous waxed commander from Britain’s CF Stead tannery. Seriously primo stuff.
