About this deal

Too many Torx screws: Like many of Logitech keyboards, the Stream Desktop keyboard and mouse are both designed to resist tamper. Unlike Logitech keyboards, Cherry chose to use Torx screws. And not just a few, no less than 11 screws attach the two halves of the keyboard case together. While these likely make the keyboard more durable and harder to damage when dropped or flexed, they also make it difficult for the user to replace components on their own. With zero wobble and a generous 2.8mm of travel, the Cherry Stream feels refreshingly precise, noticeably more comfortable than your typical mushy generic desktop keyboard. It's a pleasure to type for hours on this board, though it doesn't come with a wrist rest.

The CHERRY JK-8500 available from Keyboard Specialists is robust, reliable and durable. That's because there's quality in every detail: from above, from below and inside. Because - uniquely in its price category - the CHERRY STREAM uses scissor switches for the keys. This is a keyboard technology that is also used in high-end laptops and produces a very special typing feel. Technology is not the only thing in the CHERRY STREAM that meets very high standards. The ultimate keyboard is also way ahead when it comes to environmental friendliness. Compliance with quality and environmental targets and directives is rightly becoming more and more important. The CHERRY STREAM has been awarded the Blue Angel environmental certification. The GS safety mark also certifies that the product complies with all relevant European directives and regulations associated with the protection of health. I use several wireless keyboards, at home and at various work locations. I have an old Logitech K235 (which is awful) that I decided to replace and decided on the Stream. All you need to do is insert the batteries, plug the USB wireless receiver that connects both devices to your PC’s USB 2.0 port, switch both on, and you’re good to go. This is honestly incredibly refreshing. We spend a lot of time testing different peripherals loaded with features and a boatload of customizations, and reviewing one that’s simple and straightforward feels like a nice and relaxing vacation. But too much simplicity can be a downside. With no instructions or walkthrough, new users may have a hard time figuring out just how to edit settings. And if you’re a Mac user, you won’t be able to edit macros at all, something to consider if you're looking for a Mac keyboard replacement.

A More Appetizing Cherry

The same can’t be said about the two thumb buttons on the left wing of the mouse. These periphery switches often feel mushy and like you haven’t quite managed to press them correctly. However, they register just fine regardless, even if it is frustrating to work with them. Bottom line A basic keyboard, when done well, can be a real keeper that you carry over from PC to PC. The Cherry Stream Wireless is an almost perfect office keyboard. While it doesn’t hit the comfort levels of other ergonomic office keyboard offerings, like the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard, the Cherry Stream Wireless is sturdy and dependable while maintaining a thin, low profile. Underneath the keyboard on its gray belly, you’ll find eight rubber grips that do a good job of keeping the keyboard still and secure on your desk, as well as two feet underneath that pop out of the keyboard’s frame to provide some extra support and height. The legs are stiff and require some force to pop out, but once they are out, they hold their own just fine. Cherry’s featured keyboard is probably worth the asking price alone, especially if you want to maintain a quiet environment. The Silent Precision mouse will do wonders for that setting too, as it effortlessly glides across surfaces with switches so quiet you’d swear it was on mute. Can be used in many places: offices, open-plan offices, medical practices, at home, suitable for professional and private use

Its main attraction is that, while it's not a premium mechanical keyboard, neither does it use the flimsy silicon- or rubber-dome technology of the cheapest boards. Instead, it splits the difference with Cherry SX scissor switches that make it basically a desktop version of a laptop keyboard. The brand’s signature Cherry SX scissor switches (think, Apple’s Butterfly Keyboard if it was made by people who knew what they were doing) make every keypress feel like a quiet yet tactile note that slowly builds into an orchestral swell as you break out into a typing rally. Durable and reliable thanks to high manufacturing quality and scissor technology with less wear and tear

All-in-all, the Cherry Stream Desktop is a fantastic bundle for the price. Looks can be deceiving, and if you judged Cherry’s duo by sight alone you’d be passing over one of the best non-mechanical keyboard experiences in the budget market. Unique typing feel in its price category with CHERRY SX scissor mechanism as used in laptop keyboards For all lovers of quiet keyboards with the inimitable typing feel of a STREAM KEYBOARD, there is now a smaller and space-saving alternative: The STREAM KEYBOARD TKL. The two look very similar but differ in one significant way: The corded TKL version has the same main keypad as the popular STREAM KEYBOARD, but it does not have the number pad and is, therefore, smaller in size. For many applications, this is a decisive advantage. It’s unmistakably different from Cherry’s mechanical switches, but these low-profile designs are still capable of delivering a fantastic feel to your typing experience. You’d be forgiven for denying that, at their core, each one of these switches features an elastomer dome. Because no key leaves you feeling like you’re tapping away at a mushy membrane keyboard. Weight: A lot of typists prefer heavier keyboards for typing stability. Even so, the Cherry Stream Desktop keyboard weighs 58 grams more than the MK520 keyboard.

You can easily see the effect yourself. Fire up a painting program and draw series of lines, gently easing up on the finger pressure. You'll be able to easily find a dead zone where the mouse button still feels like you are pressing it down, but the mouse no longer thinks you are. I have attached a picture showing the resulting gaps (highlighted in red) from drawing a series of what should be continuous lines. But that also shows just how responsive, fast, and accurate the Cherry Stream Desktop keyboard and mouse are. During our tests, we have not experienced any lags nor missed presses, even when we’re in the zone and typing very fast. There is no mention of features like N-key rollover or anti-ghosting, but they don’t seem necessary here with the keyboard performance. As far as the mouse, it has a DPI button that will let you cycle through 3 DPI settings: 1000, 1600, and 2400 – and they are more than enough for everyday tasks. No delays on the screen, fluent typing without stopping, control over the input at all times and thus fewer typos. The unique SX scissor technology from CHERRY makes this possible. You tap on flatter keys, giving you a more precise stroke as well as less wear and tear. Minute by minute, day by day, year on year. The Stream keyboard lives up to the reputation of being a great keyboard. It's not quite to the level of the Logitech MX Keys in my opinion, but it definitely is responsive and feels good. The keyboard gets a solid A. You’ll also find a battery door underneath—yes, the Cherry Stream Wireless is AA-battery-operated. That's perhaps a downside for some, but it promises a whopping 36 months of use without a replacement pair. Keep in mind, there’s no wired connection capability if you run out of juice. The setup is surprisingly simple – so simple we honestly thought at first we were doing something wrong. With just a plug-and-play setup, the Cherry Stream Desktop keyboard and mouse combo is a boon for offices with multiple computers and multiple users, as well as casual home users who aren’t necessarily well-versed in technology.
