She's a doctor — "first, do no harm" is her code, but beyond that there's "first, look for a solution. I also liked the historical aspect to the story, seeing life on board a steamship, and seeing the different ways of etiquette amongst the staff and passengers. And for this, Eagle can easily be forgiven for including the eating of coronation chicken, despite it not being introduced to the discerning English palate for another 43 years. Some middle grade books do, some don't, but my low score is by no means an indication of poor story telling abilities by the author. It's 1910 when the 'Glory' sets sail from Liverpool bound for New York and carrying an accidental passenger, Patch', who finds herself on a rollicking adventure happening on every deck of the ship! I am really enjoying the increasing range of well written children's literature with strong female leads.

Michael nearly takes his own life, but Zoe stops him and convinces him to hold out for a while longer. Luckily, Patch's unconventional past has made her pretty fearless when it comes to fending for herself, and besides there are friends in high and low places to be made onboard. Self-doubt and the loss of belief in others’ actions and motives are experienced and deliberated over from her point of view.

Hardly anyone is who they seem and as the action accelerates and hurtles towards its final resolution, we, and Patch, gradually piece together the truth about their identities and past lives. Patch makes friends and enemies onboard, hiding away is difficult and there is a mystery to solve before the ship docks in New York. This is a fun, fast paced adventure with fantastic characters and an old fashioned feel that gives it great appeal. After the ascent ship docks with the Kingfisher station on its journey to Mars, the crew perform a number of inspections and checks on the ship’s key systems. They were many layered, like wedding cakes, with at least eight decks, stretching from the super luxurious upper decks, with cafes and restaurants and orchestras , down to the very bottom decks, where the stokers toiled day and night , feeding the fiery furnaces with coal to keep the engines going.

But hiding away becomes less and less her new friends urgently need her help and there's a mystery that needs solving, all before they reach New York . She currently works in two secondary schools as a librarian and library assistant and is the author of The Secret Starling and The Pear Affair. Things go from bad to worse in a hurry, culminating in a devastating ending that leaves some of the film’s biggest questions unanswered. There are sweet illustrations throughout the book by Kim Geyer, and I think they helped to add to the charm of the story, capturing some of the characters and antics on board. Along the way, they encounter an array of colourful characters who become intrinsic to the development of the story.

Passengers included swanky lords and ladies swanning a bout in first class, and much humbl er, poorer families in second and third.Having managed to gain access to a master key for the ship, the girls are free to explore their surroundings, from the first-class decks through the kitchens and into the engine rooms.
