For those who’ve not played the Undaunted series, here’s a brief overview of what you do on your turn: you play cards to send soldiers to their doom, repeatedly. Additionally, the game benefits from a singular, branching campaign that slowly ratchets up the tension and cleverly adds more units to your reserve pool over time. If I’d played Undaunted Stalingrad before the end of 2022, it would’ve placed as my number two game of the year. As you might expect from previous Undaunteds, the gameplay is finely tuned, perfectly balanced and appropriately nuanced, and its transposition to an even more epic arena makes Stalingrad feel like the series at its peak, particularly when the unfolding campaign throws some surprises – both narrative and mechanical – at you.One of those clever turns, and the second impressive achievement of the campaign system, is the personality imbued in the setting. Unlike the Normandy and North Africa instalments, Stalingrad’s scenarios can’t be played individually as stand-alone games with whomever you choose. You’re one of the few people who I don’t think would be dissuaded by the LONG but now coherent rulebook so I think I can recommend. Turns continue until one side has met its victory conditions and then we move on through the Campaign steps. While each player has a market of cards they can acquire, you’re not exactly constructing an engine with a predictable and well-defined arc. Stalingrad features the ability to destroy buildings and replace tiles, which carries forward to future missions. There are many actions to discover, new units to explore, and the campaign continually introduces new elements for you to learn.
