About this deal

Meliora” was a huge surprise for me, because I wasn't anticipating its release for too long. Their previous albums and singles were enough to hold me over until their new release. But now I'm happy to have been able to listen to it multiple times.

Siehe „Spöksonat“. Nur mit Orgel und „Witchfinder General meets 70s Porn-Movie“-Atmosphäre. Knuffig. Meliora” is worth buying just for “Cirice” and “From the Pinnacle to the Pit”. The former is just so epic that it deserves the most attention than any other song on the album. The latter is just a really fun, grimy single that evokes in my mind someone in power literally falling from grace. Spirit” is a great way to get the album going. The Nameless Ghoul on keyboards starts the whole thing off nicely, and the vocals from Papa are flawless as usual.

I am a very new Ghost fan. I had barely even heard of them until I listened to the first single “Cirice” sometime in July. I was honestly blown away the first time I listened to it, and continue to play it on repeat. I literally couldn't get “Cirice” out of my head for about the first week. I've listened to it close to 100 times so far and continue to do so. Opinion on their previous album, Infestissumam, was cleanly divided between those who adored its enhanced theatrical ambitions and those who missed the succinct thud of 2010's Opus Eponymous. Led by the eerily detached proclamations of third vocal incumbent Papa Emeritus III, Meliorastrikes a shrewd balance between its two predecessors, snappier song structures moderating the intrusive impact of the band's most unhinged ideas. The malevolent swagger that drives the likes of 'Spirit' and 'From the Pinnacle to the Pit' ensures that underground metal fans will still feel the scorch of hellish flames, but these often startlingly catchy songs deserve to reach a much bigger audience.

Die „Congregation“ reißt sich die Klamotten vom Leib und singt „Put your hands up and reach for the sky, cry for absolution!!!“. Papa Emeritus has the voice of an angel, ironic considering he's basically personified as some kind of evil pope. I actually didn't love his vocals at first, but they really grew on me. I typically like metal vocalists with a tenor voice. Tool, Chevelle, 10 Years, and Deftones are some of my favorite bands, and all have a tenor vocalist. I can safely say that Ghost can now join the ranks of these amazing metal bands. The only thing I had seen about Ghost was their appearance, which lead me to believe that they were some sort of growley death metal band. Nothing could be further from the truth. But if their 2013 sophomore album Infestissumam was supposed to be metal's second commercial coming, there couldn't have been a worse album to place that expectation upon. Opus Eponymous, their unabashedly derivative 2010 debut, at least had solid hooks. There's that whole thing about catching more flies with honey than vinegar, but vinegar is a crucial ingredient of metal. With Meliora, their third full-length, they've dropped the temporary B.C. from their name and returned to a heavier direction, ditching most of the lite Mercyful Fate/Blue Öyster Cult hybrid for more folk and Deep Purple influences. It's far and away a more engaging record than Infestissumam, but still, you have to wonder if Ghost should be metal's new chief representative.
