About this deal

Rival manufacturer Sakuma Confectionery Co, which was founded when its management team parted ways with Sakumaseika after the war, has announced that it will continue to produce and release a similar product called Sakuma Drops. Instead of a red tin, the confusingly named product is stored in a green tin. Setsuko has been periodically featured on special Sakumashiki Drops tins following Grave of the Fireflies’ 1988 release. Seita relocates to an abandoned shelter, thinking their leftover money would be enough to survive through the war.

Money wasn’t the problem, because Seita had money. Nonetheless, none of that matters when the government is the one in charge of all the food supply nationwide. There’s no free market economy any more. That’s why the old man refused to sell some rice to Seita. The farmer knew that once he sells the remaining rice supply to the boy, he won’t have any left for himself. Sebeok and Danesi noted “semiotics” as the study of signs encompassing the systematic study of meaning-bearing forms derived from the human cognitive and social activities moderated by forms of meaning generated by the models of the world, such as words, drawings, and artifacts among others, people make and use on the regular basis. They enumerated four basic types of forms used in semiotic research, these being signs, texts, codes and figural assemblages (1). Among these four forms, the sign is considered the most human representation. Although signs have been defined in various ways, three dimensions are implied in every definition, namely, the physical dimension called the "signifier", the conceptual dimension called the "signified" which provokes the referential domain, and the interpretive dimension called the "signification" which is the meaning deduced from the sign. The first two dimensions of the sign are inseparable, that is, once a signifier is linked to a signified, a sign is formed (20, 21).

With eight fruit flavours available, Sakuma’s Drops are sold in an iconic red steel can and the colourful hard candies have been a family favourite for over 100 years. For the sets, while for My Neighbor Totoro Miyazaki called on Kazuo Oga , Takahata worked with Nizô Yamamoto. One will notice the big difference between the works of the two artistic directors: the closed world of The Grave of the Fireflies is opposed to the very open world described in Totoro . The meticulousness with which the daily living environment is described in great detail, is based on a work of a quality which was undoubtedly the first foundation of the reputation of Studio Ghibli in their representations of the world. When the screen turns red during the work, it means that the ghosts of Seita and Setsuko have appeared and are looking closely, staring at the memory over and over again, and it is directed red like Ashura. However, in the anime picture book, this part is largely omitted, and there is only a scene that suggests that the two people who are looking at the modern city of Kobe at the end are ghosts in a red state. Anime picture books generally faithfully follow the main part of the movie, but explain the lines, actions, and scenes that suddenly appeared. A few sequences later, the film shows the spirit of Setsuko, Seita’s younger sister, materialize from a tin candy container containing broken bones – perhaps her remains – thrown onto a grass field, and later joined by Seita's spirit and fireflies. They later boarded a train, still clouded by a few fireflies, traveling across post-World War II Japan. All throughout the film, we see their spirits being cast in red light. Hibi, Fukuda, and Bester noted that in Japanese culture, the color red is a symbolic representation of blood and fire (8). Blood and fire are both related to life and, in corollary, death. Blood flow translates to being alive, whereas fire plays a crucial role in survival, and therefore, staying alive. Leitch, T. (2007). The Journal of Asian Studies, 66(3), 657-683. https://doi.org/10.1017/s0021911807001118Max Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓, Hotaru no Haka) is a feature-length animated film written and directed by Isao Takahata, produced by Studio Ghibli in association with Shinchosha Publishing and distributed by Toho. It premiered in Japan on April 16, 1988, and was billed as a double-feature with My Neighbor Totoro. The film stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara and Akemi Yamaguchi. Seita and Setsuko didn’t ask to be orphans, war took their parents away from them. Was the aunt the bad guy in this story? She definitely didn’t help, but she wasn’t the culprit for the two children’s death. When Seita decided to leave his aunt’s house, that was almost a death sentence for him and his sister. Having said that, did Seita make the wrong decision? The boy made a decision. In another interview on Animage in 1987, Director Isao Takahata likened the book to a "double-suicide" play, The ending of the Grave of the Fireflies is definitely haunting and bittersweet. On one hand, it’s a terrible thing to know that our main characters died of starvation. But on the other hand, it’s comforting to watch the siblings’ souls reuniting after their death. It provides a sense of closure.

Many of Seita and Setsuko's troubles are usually because of people's unwillingness to lend a hand to those around them, with their focused on self-preservation instead of the community and human decency that are necessary in tough times. Japan’s involvement in World War II had a lot to do with the country’s strong sense of nationalism. People should love their own countries and it’s their right to do so, but when one believes that their country is far superior than others, that crosses a dangerous line. Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓) by Studio Ghibli is the saddest movie I have ever seen and at the same time the best anti-war movie I have ever seen. It tells the story of two orphan children, Seita and her sister Setsuko, after the bombing of Kobe at the end of World War II. They are alone trying to survive on their own and one of the few things they have to eat is a candy box that Setsuko keeps as if it was a treasure. As the story unfolds the candy box becomes one of the most important symbols in the movie. Racel, M. N. (2021). Grave of the Fireflies and Japan's memories of World War II. Retrieved October 15, 2021.Seita puts his own faith in the military by assuming his father and his fellow soldiers will win the war, return home, and take care of everything. He was wrong. By the time he realizes his faith in the war effort was misplaced, it's too late: Setsuko is too malnourished, and she dies of starvation. One way or another, Seita soon follows. The candy was originally made by Sakuma Candy ( 佐久間製菓, Sakuma Seika), based in Ikebukuro, Tokyo in 1908. The company ceased production during World War 2 due to the sugar shortages. After the war, employees of the original company founded two new companies that continued making the candy, one using the original name and a second also called Sakuma Candy (サクマ製菓), but written in katakana instead of kanji. [1] The second company owns the trademark to the name "Sakuma Drops" and sells their candy as such in green cans, while the original used the name "Sakuma's Drops" (サクマ式ドロップス ( "Sakuma-style drops", Sakuma-shiki doroppusu)) and red tins.
