Mary GrandPré has created images for advertising and magazines, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and the Wall Street Journal. One of a new line of palm-sized art books, The Art of Harry Potter: Mini Book of Magical Places presents an incredible treasure trove of Harry Potter concept art in a special miniature format. Filled with behind-the-scenes facts and insights, this book is the perfect way to keep the magic and mystery of the Harry Potter films close to your heart. This is a beautifully made, informative, and fun movie companion book! Well, maybe this is nothing more than a glorified movie magazine in book form, but it gave me plenty of entertainment value. I adore the Harry Potter books and I really like the movies, and this is a fun book for fans of the movies. The book covers all 8 movies, so I got to see a (very) few scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 before the movie comes out. The graphic artists who designed the films and their contents also designed this book, and they did a fabulous job, with both endeavors. There is much attention to detail, even including the printed on name plate at the beginning of the book. Filled with behind-the-scenes facts and insights, it’s the perfect way to keep the magic and mystery of the Harry Potter films close to your heart. I have to say, this one surprised me. What might seem trivial turned out to be the beating heart of this world. These things are the foundations that the Wizarding World is built upon, the glue that holds it together. And they are absolutely beautiful and full of colour and detail. Character sketches include in a location, concept sketches, outfit planning and studies. They are, again, beautiful, and it becomes evident how hard the staff worked on getting every little detail just right.

The books size (and yes weight) means that the heavy gauge paper have huge illustrations of the world that Harry Potter inhabited - so you have images that never before have been seen in hugh high quality spreads.

If you’re wondering why Taylor had to keep working in a bookshop after designing the cover of a multi-million-selling book, it’s because the job “was pretty poorly paid initially”. The contract was later re-drawn so he got a bit more money, “but it doesn’t really generate income”, he says. He doesn’t get royalties? “No, the contract licenses it for a one-off fee… But I can’t complain,” he adds brightly. “You don’t normally make money out of a book cover.” Don't hate me for this people! Here's the thing, the artwork is BEAUTIFUL, don't get me wrong, BUT if you've read the movie books, aka artifacts, locations, creatures, characters, etc, where they show you the behind the scene stuff...we've seen the majority of these photos before. Therefore, for the price, it's hard to justify buying this book..again. And the worst part is, they sealed the book so you don't realize this until AFTER you buy it. Granted, the pictures are in a bigger format so you can see some newer details you might have missed before, but, for the price, I expected a lot more. I wanted a lot more newer photos, newer things we hadn't seen, etc. There's very little writing in the book, no chapters with explanations (for example, we see that indeed they had planned on making Hermione's dress Periwinkle Blue! If you are a Harry Potter fanatic this is a must-have addition to your library. It covers the Harry Potter world in a virtual 3-D approach. The book is full of surprises and beautiful artwork. Mere words cannot convey the enjoyment the reader will receive from this book. My favorite part was the chapter on the graphic arts department. MinaLima (the graphic designers that worked on all the films) are so talented and I love their work. I'd frame it all if I could. Cunningham had warned Rowling, too, that she would “never make any money from the book”, but its popularity soon exploded. When “the mania”, as Taylor puts it, took off, he was still working at the bookshop. And whenever a customer bought a copy of Harry Potter, his colleagues would point him out and tell them that he did the cover. Most of the time they didn’t believe it. “You could see them thinking, ‘Why is the person associated with this huge thing working behind the till?’” he says. Normally I don’t elaborate on products or production based book, but this one is good enough to do just that.
