About this deal
The base of the whisky was matured for the first time in new oak casks from the Republic of Adygea (in southern Russia). Whisky from these casks has then been married with regular bourbon cask matured Ardbeg and bottled for Fèis Ìle 2017 at 46%. Ardbeg Distillery (Scottish Gaelic: Taigh-stail Àirde Beaga) is a Scotch whisky distillery in Ardbeg on the south coast of the isle of Islay, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, in the Inner Hebrides group of islands.
A curious burst of peachy, estery fruit, hickory wood, clove oil and a suggestion of black olives on the aftertaste. The press material suggests that the casks give “incredibly deep flavours” to the whisky, whatever that actually means. Off the bat it is like chewing on a burnt piece of rope that has been dunked in the ocean and I mean that in a good way. There’s an slightly wet grassy note as well which, combined with the brine, reminds me of standing on a grassy hill near the ocean. But those questions won’t stop me from tasting it because a true whisky geek will be curious and will want to try it – hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
There’s a hint of smoldering charcoal, a little more of that lemon hard candy, and a bit of malt biscuit. The whisky boasts intense flavour, offering a peppery palate, with hints of spice, toffee and vanilla, finishing on a black olive note. Chocolate coated toffee, treacle toffee, dark chocolate, nutty walnut, coffee grinds, camp coffee, chicory leaf, teak oil, clove, aniseed balls, this is quite full-bodied with some bright peachy fruit and some briny sea spray also.
