About this deal

From the designer of the hit game Kigi, Kodama: The Tree Spirits branches out into a fun new way to play! That has passers by stop when they see that game spread out on the table and ask, “what are you playing? However, the art and the ability to place cards anywhere, in any orientation, as long as the branch of the new card touches a branch on the tree, makes Kodama a lot more satisfying and almost tactile.

The knowledge of those trees that have kodama living in them is passed down by the elderly of that area over successive generations and they are protected, and it is also said that trees that have a kodama living in them are of certain species. Seeing your tree grow and the animals and plants inhabit the newly created living space is much more fun than worrying about how many points you get from what card. A player’s turn consists of selecting one of the three branch cards that are face-up in the middle of the table to add to their Kodama. It is possible to take the branch that would give your opponents the most points, but most of the time you’re better off focussing on what you need, rather than ruining other players’ plans. Like focussing on specific features or for getting as many cards as possible touching your trunk, say.Gameplay itself is easy to pick up and teach, with most four player games taking around 60 mins to complete. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. In modern times, cutting down a tree which is home to a kodama is thought to bring misfortune and such trees are often marked with shimenawa rope. Some branch cards may not score you many points initially, but could help a great deal at the end of the round depending on which of a players’ Kodama Card they choose.

In the collection of yōkai depictions, the Gazu Hyakki Yagyō by Toriyama Sekien, under the title 木魅 ("kodama"), an aged man and woman are depicted standing alongside the trees and here it is stated that when a tree has passed a hundred years of age, a divine spirit would come dwell inside it and show its appearance. Kodama: The Tree Spirits - build beautiful trees that please the forest spirits in this gorgeously illustrated strategy game that the whole family can enjoy. We also thought that some Kodama cards were better than others, but it balanced out in the end because the scores were rather close.

Throughout the gameplay those opportunities challenge the players as to how they choose to get their points.

This often appeared cluttered and could be a little difficult to manage with first edition (if playing with 4-5 players).

There are also simpler, little Kodama cards that kids can play with to make this title fun and accessible for the whole family. At the end of the season, the current Decree card is discarded and a new one revealed at the start of the next season. As mentioned previously, these icons will determine how many points you will score once it is placed on your Kodama. The best part of Kodama: The Tree Spirits is the balance the game has between immediate strategy and long term strategy. I feel that this review reflects my own, independent and honest opinion, but the facts below allow you to decide whether you think that I was influenced in any way.

These Daruma figures are made from sacred trees which are discharged from the service of protecting the sanctified grounds of a shrine. Taking a leaf (pardon the pun) from Kigi, Kodama continues to provide a beautiful table top presence. I prefer to see the funny side of spending evenings moving pieces of cardboard and wood around a table. At the time of writing, neither the designers, nor the publisher, nor anyone linked to the game supported me financially or by payment in kind.Just FYI: the new aspects to Zoo Vadis (unique powers and peacocks) were added in (bolted on) by the good doctor himself. Even for those who don’t respond to the theme and are purely playing to maximize their points, there is plenty of thinking to be done to ensure you get the longest chain of features on your tree, without going over the 10 point limit. In The Tale of Genji, there are statements such as "is it an oni, a god ( kami), a fox ( kitsune), or a tree spirit (kodama)" and "the oni of a kodama", and thus, it can be seen that kodama are seen to be close to yōkai. Branch cards can be placed either directly onto one of the larger branches off of your Kodama’s trunk, or can continue from a branch already in the display by overlapping it slightly.
