Thomas Vinterberg to Direct 'Kursk' Submarine Movie for Luc Besson's EuropaCorp". Variety. 21 January 2016 . Retrieved 14 March 2017. It’s an unlikely lurch toward the multiplex for a director who once co-founded the Dogme 95 movement with Lars von Trier and there are some interesting stylistic choices at play. The most notable, and successful, of these is Vinterberg’s decision to play with the screen ratio, only widening it out when the Kursk is submerged, and elsewhere, he employs intimate camerawork in the scenes between the men both above and below sea level, an independent touch in a broader picture, and some eerily effective views of the water that surrounds the ailing sub. It’s not all quite as effective, however. Given the budget and the ensuing expectations, Kursk exists in that familiar movie universe where Russian characters are played by Belgian, French, German and Swedish actors, all of whom speak English throughout. It’s a price to pay for a wider audience and while initially distracting, it could have been far worse (*coughs* Harrison Ford in K-19 *ends coughing*).

Intercutting between the plight of the men on the Kursk, their families at home, and the Russian bureaucrats in their offices, makes for an interwoven narrative where all sides of the people involved are highlighted, and specifically the motivation for their different agendas. The Kursk submarine disaster that took place in August 2000 in the Barents Sea lasted for several days. Of course the longer this went on for and relied on international assistance, the more it exposed the falability of the Russian military might. It lasted for a total of 4 days and made news headlines around the world as international help, including from the British Navy tried to reach out to the Russian government and offer assisstance to assist in the rescue of the crew of this nuclear submarine, but alas to no avail, tragically ending the lives of its 118 crew members. One of the foreigners trying to help is real life Commodore David Russell (Colin Firth), commander of HMS Vanguard, a Trident nuclear vessel. However, the Russian government, despite the offers coming from the international community refused help and wasted valuable time. They would have rather sacrificed these sailors rather than swallow their pride and request help. One of the key Russian dignataries from the upper echelons is played by the ever stable Max Von Sydow.Taking the time to allow the viewer to make emotional bonds with the main characters in their private lives at the beginning of the movie pays off when everyone is on the submarine and everything begins to go wrong.

The Kursk: The Last Mission (2019) DVD review - Werkre

Kursk: The Last Mission is a dramatisation of the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster, where Russian bureaucracy, failing technology, and a series of unfortunate accidents, all came together to claim the lives of 188 men. Ok, I am not fan at all of Soviet communism, of Russian nationalism under Putin, but this film is not bashing those evils -- it is bashing the Russian navy and doing so with falsehoods. it is political elements in Russia that underfunded and rushed the Kursk dangerous and haphazard refitting, that pushed early deployment, not their navy. Subject matter experts such as journalist Robert Moore (author of the novel upon which the film is based), David Russell (British Royal Navy commodore who had tried to save the men from the Kursk), and submarine expert Ramsey Martin acted as advisors for the film. [17] On August 12, 2000, two underwater explosions sank the Kursk, Russia’s most technologically advanced submarine, plunging it 100m to the bottom of the Barents Sea. The second explosion was so big that it hit 4.2 on the Richter scale and was detected as far away as Alaska. Initially there were survivors – a reported 23 men trapped in the husk of the submarine – but after days of botched rescue attempts and stubbornness from the Russian Navy, the disaster had claimed the lives of all 118 crew members. The Hollywood Reporter. 15 March 2017 . Retrieved 6 May 2017. Some commentators here are repeating long debunked myths that the Kurks was sunk in a collision with a US boat or some other external cause. While that was always an unlikely scenario, it could not be ruled out at the time -- BUT for a decade they Russian Navy and sober Russians have known, with 100% certainty, this was a torpedo malfunction inside the Kursk.

On 17 August 2015, it was announced that EuropaCorp was developing a film based on the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster, and that Martin Zandvliet had been hired to direct the film from a script by Robert Rodat, based on Robert Moore's 2002 book A Time to Die. Kursk would have been Zandvliet's first English-language film. [3] On 21 January 2016, it was reported that Zandvliet was no longer attached and that EuropaCorp had hired Thomas Vinterberg to direct the film. On 8 May 2017, Peter Simonischek, Max von Sydow and Michael Nyqvist were announced in the cast. [17] However, Nyqvist died on 27 June. [18] I have to admit that before viewing, I knew nothing at all about the Kursk submarine disaster, and so can not comment on the historical accuracy of the events portrayed on screen. However, the very fact that it is based on true events adds an extra chilling layer to an already tension filled and heartbreaking experience.
