About this deal

Just as the clock strikes midnight a scream is heard and everyone converges in the kitchen, only to find Nana dead on the floor. When they hear someone coming down the stairs, Conor tells Rose, Trixie, and Daisy to lock themselves in the library. Brutally honest at times, but it's those kind of stark observations and willingness to look at the good, bad, and ugly of human nature that takes her books up yet ANOTHER notch. Many years ago, long before I was born, a palm reader at a fair in Land’s End told my nana that she wouldn’t live beyond the age of eighty.

She was born with a heart condition and died multiple times in her life already because of her heart stopping, but she managed to survive every time. When Nana is turning 80-years old on Halloween and invites you to visit her at her tired, gothic-feeling home on a tiny, tidal island, you go. the darker family is the the biggest bunch of self-centred, out-of-touch with reality, petty cry babies i have ever read about. She is the favorite granddaughter of Nana and she’s the narrator of the story, feeling the cold breath of death against her neck because her poor heart condition. As soon as I read that blurb, I knew I was going to love it, and I was so gripped the whole way and just could NOT believe that ending. Alice Feeney always puts tons of clues and tiny details in her books, things that are hard for one reader to find, so I can’t wait to discuss it with you! The only visual proof of my condition is carved down the middle of my chest in the form of a faded pink scar. So, yes, I was expecting the culprit to be a fake victim (and my money was on Nana since the beginning).

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney | Goodreads

With an overarching sense of doom and danger lurking at every turn, Feeney has created something both entirely creepy and completely riveting in Daisy Darker. In Daisy Darker, the estranged Darker family reluctantly gathers at Nana’s dilapidated coastal cottage to mark her 80th birthday. When the 80 clocks chime the midnight hour, there is a terrifying scream, after which the Darker family’s lives get even ‘darker’, leading to a very surprising and unexpected ending! Eccentric at best, she dresses only in pink and purple, has a wall of 80 clocks she has collected-one for every year of her life-and has her guests punch in on a time clock. I’m still here, I have a niece whom I adore spending time with, and I’m proud of my work volunteering at a care home for the elderly.

They were so well written, they were flawed and complex and I just kept suspecting one after another. Aside from being integral to the plot (no one could get on or off), the isolation fostered extreme camaraderie between its inhabitants over the years. Twenty-nine years after my traumatic arrival, I’m very grateful to have had more time than anyone predicted. Lily eventually told her parents the truth, but they kept quiet to protect their surviving daughters. My life was never the same after I died a second time because that’s when everyone knew for sure what I think they already suspected: that I was broken. Every couple of years during my slightly dysfunctional childhood, doctors would take it in turns to open me up again, have a look inside, and do a few repairs. Instead we get scant mentions of the surroundings at the outset, which are soon lost in a swarm of interpersonal squabbles between Daisy and her older sisters, Rose and Lily. Although not in a storm… it sounded like a truly terrifying place when the waves were crashing against the outside walls of the house and the wind was howling.
