About this deal

The whole Rose story was quite good but again I felt there was something off with how she remembered every detail of Hubert's "friends" and I felt a bit let down by the reveal. I'm not sure why that had to be the case.... it just seemed like piling on unnecessary tragedy! And what actually happened to David? I'm not sure if he died too...was the body in the river his? Maybe I skimmed the bit that explained what happened to him? As well as being deeply distressing for individuals, loneliness has wider implications for our communities and society. Evidence shows that loneliness leads to greater pressure on public services through, for instance, increased GP visits, longer hospital stays, increased likelihood of entering residential care and the costs of associated conditions such as depression and diabetes. Mehnaz's story: how my MS diagnosis affects my feelings of loneliness Loneliness is usually best explained as the result of individual factors such as disability, depression, widowhood or leaving home without your partner. Yet some commentators say larger forces, such as “neoliberalism”, are at work. Where do they all come from?

This is a successful dual timeline in my opinion, I was invested equally in both and didn't mind the chapters hopping between the two. Hubert Bird, an immigrant from Jamaica to Britain in 1958, has been telling stories to his daughter Rose who lives in Australia. During their weekly phone calls, he tells her about his busy week with his group of friends, detailing their many activities.Oh my goodness! If you haven't read this wonderfully charming book, add it to your list. Not only was this a solid 5 stars, it will definitely be one of my most favorite reads this year. Another book I wish I could read again for the very first time. I loved it so, so much! You might find it hard to explain to people why you feel this way, but talking to someone could help you find a solution.

I was also born in Birmingham — in my humble opinion the greatest city in the world with the nicest people too. Listening to this in the afternoons when I was jobless, seeking any type of work that would pay—after my scholarship’s graduation stipend was depleted, spent for mailing my essays and poems to city-based magazines, that never even saw publication. Writing never did pay, and that time I hardly knew that it didn’t or that it could. The research found that the risk of being often lonely is dramatically higher among those people who are widowed, do not have someone to open up to, or are in poor health. Using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), the Charity’s analysis identified that the over-50s are over five times more likely to be ‘often lonely’ if they are widowed compared with older people who are in a relationship, and nearly four times more likely to be ‘often lonely’ if they are in poor health compared with older people who are in good or excellent health. It also found older people are more than twice as likely to be ‘often lonely’ if they have money issues, compared with those who don’t.[ii]

I skim-read some of this book and found it a bit tedious and not particularly good writing, not descriptive and a little shallow. Before I went to university I wanted to be a social worker — I have no idea why. It didn’t last long. Ben Onwukwe did an amazing job with this book. After listening to this book, I couldn’t imagine experiencing this book in any other way. I really felt like he brought Hubert to life. I loved the accents and the different voices that he used in narrating this story. I thought that he had a very pleasant voice and was able to bring out the emotion in the story. Doctors and policymakers in the rich world are increasingly worried about loneliness. Campaigns to reduce it have been launched in Britain, Denmark and Australia. In Japan the government has surveyed hikikomori, or “people who shut themselves in their homes”. Last year Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon-general of the United States, called loneliness an epidemic, likening its impact on health to obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes per day. In January Theresa May, the British prime minister, appointed a minister for loneliness. When I saw the comparison to A Man Called Ove I knew immediately I was going to love this book. And although my shelves are bursting with books that continue to wait for me to read them, I decided All The Lonely People was going to be next. I mean, the cover alone is just so lovely. Hubert's cat Puss looks just like my Archie! :) Hubert Bird. I adore you. Hubert Bird lives a lonely and isolated life, has for years, but you couldn’t tell that from the sunny updates he provides his daughter Rose in their weekly phone calls. He lives in the London borough of Bromley and she’s a professor with a wonderful career in Melbourne, Australia. He even maintains a notebook to keep up with his lies about his busy life full of friends and activities. But now with Rose’s planned visit in six weeks, Hubert has to somehow create the life he’s sold to his daughter to make certain she doesn’t feel the need to uproot her life and return home to take care of him. Kevin from Reading , PaDustin, I don't think America was especially God loving when they were having their hits. Dan Peek is the one who got religion more or less after he left the in the late 70s. At least that's how I understand it.

Yet loneliness is not especially a phenomenon of the elderly. The polling found no clear link between age and loneliness in America or Britain—and in Japan younger people were in fact lonelier. Young adults, and the very old (over-85s, say) tend to have the highest shares of lonely people of any adult age-group. Other research suggests that, among the elderly, loneliness tends to have a specific cause, such as widowhood. In the young it is generally down to a gap in expectations between relationships they have and those they want.

Now Hubert faces a seemingly impossible task: to make his real life resemble his fake life before the truth comes out. Lianna from Sylva, NcIt is also very interesting to note that many Pagans use this song, as in the last line it says "She" will never take you down or never give you up", which to Wiccans refers to the Goddess, and the silver cup is the chalice that predates the cup of Christ, and the silver highway is the silver astral cord leading from this life to that which comes next, Wiccans having no belief in Hell. Lovely that we can share these things. :o) Gayle weaves a tale which touches on many modern issues – racism, drug abuse, crime, mental health – which makes it feel relevant to our times. His characters are not perfect and neither are their lives, which gives makes them easy to relate to. There is also a poignant twist to the tale which I didn’t see coming, which highlights how people can build a fantasy life when their own is too painful to cope with.

Along the way Hubert stumbles across a second chance at love, renews a cherished friendship, and finds himself roped into an audacious community scheme that seeks to end loneliness once and for all ... Loneliness has become the focus of a national conversation with many organisations and charities seeing it as a modern epidemic, despite us having more ways to communicate with each other than ever before in history. Type ‘loneliness’ into Google and you’ll get everyone from the Co-op to Age UK cropping up. Another villain in the contemporary debate is technology. Smartphones and social media are blamed for a rise in loneliness in young people. This is plausible. Data from the OECD club of mostly rich countries suggest that in nearly every member country the share of 15-year-olds saying that they feel lonely at school rose between 2003 and 2015. This means, first, screening its 150,000 patients for loneliness. Those at risk are asked if they want to enroll in a “Togetherness Programme”. This involves phone calls from staff called “connectors” who help with transport to events and ideas for socialising. Patients are coaxed to visit clinics, even when not urgently ill, to play games, attend a “seniors’ gym” and just chat. Hubert better get busy! He's got some work ahead making his real life match his stories to Rose. Can he do it? The bigger question is: Why is Hubert purposely isolating himself to begin with?
