About this deal

Running your own business IS scary. On the one hand you have the freedom of being able to chase your dreams such as building empires and making your mark on the world in a big way, but the dark side is that at times it’s also grueling, exhausting, and down right spirit breaking.

Improving your life doesn’t hinge on learning how to turn lemons into lemonade but on your ability to stomach the lemons better. Or trading them off for different lemons that you’d rather put up with – but you still gotta deal with a shitload of lemons. Tried to rehabilitate a Soldier and they keep getting in trouble? Believe it or not, not everyone wants to be helped. If you have given a Soldier multiple chances at rehabilitation and they continue to fail, it is time to let go. Putting more effort into someone who is not motivated to improve will not only continue to frustrate you, but it will also damage the morale of your organization. Consider how your other Soldiers may view your actions, especially if your problem Soldier receives perceived preferential treatment. Would it be fair to administer UCMJ to the other troubled Soldiers who have been granted fewer chances? Not everyone belongs in the Army, no matter how much potential they may have.

What you want is to live a grounded, contented life. Not prance around like a gay French king flipping through his admirers thinking, “Who pleases me today? Who shall I favour? Who shall I ignore?”. (Props to Jerry Seinfeld’s 23 Hours To Kill for that image! If you haven’t already watched it, go find it on Netflix asap!) Didn’t get the award or evaluation you thought you deserved? Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to affect this. It can be a huge disappointment to work really hard for several years only to walk away with nothing to show for it. As painful as it is, it happens quite often. Take the experience and use it as an example of what not to do when you are put in leadership positions. Don’t let it stop you from trying your best. Your hard work likely doesn’t go unrecognized.

And it’s not always fair, or your fault – and sometimes it is. And you have to just step up and own that too, not just the idealised millionaire lifestyle where no struggles or problems ever reach you. But if you want to stop feeling overwhelmed and exhausted all the time, you need to become the gatekeeper of your own energy. These are just a few situations demonstrating the importance of moving on. Think of a situation in wholly dedicated yourself to only to come out disappointed on the other end. Could you have reacted differently and cut your losses? Rejection becomes less painful because your life doesn’t hinge on that one thing going your way. This is why I hate competition shows where they make it seem like if you don’t win this one TV show, you’ve missed your chance to be a singer, or a chef, or a wife. Go out and GET that accountant, copywriter, photographer, graphic designer, cleaner, what the hell ever. Make that investment.

What you need to do is to stop being “positive” all the time so that you can become a genuinely better, happier person. For decades we’ve been told that positivity is the key to happiness and that by “just staying positive” you can gloss over any ugly shit in your life you don’t like the looks of. You are stunned. How can all that effort and time be completely wasted? And yet, as a leader, you must adapt to change. You tell yourself you can make a course correction, that your work can still be salvaged. You pull yourself up by the bootstraps and prepare to dig in, ready to expend even more energy on something that cannot be recovered. You’re not born knowing how to do this, you have to learn it. Developing the ability to control and manage what it is that you’re really gonna spend your energy caring about is the essence of strength and integrity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Everything Now is a limited series that will feature eight episodes at around 45 minutes in length. Then invest in developing the things you’re already shit-hot at even further. Learn. Take classes, read books, enrol in programmes. Do the work. Grow your skill set even more.

When you’re building your business, it can sometimes feel like seeking work-life balance is futile. Work BECOMES your life, and if you’re not doing it, you’re thinking about it. In fact, it’s more than okay – it’s beautiful. It’s also ugly. And complicated. And messy. And confusing. And here is another from a non-nautical setting, in Association of Applied Biologists, Field Trials Methods and Data Handling: 16–18 December, 1985, Churchill College, Cambridge (1985):
