About this deal

The solution we have for 1959 novel by Keith Waterhouse featuring the fictional country of Ambrosia has a total of 9 letters. With the publication in 1959 of his second, Billy Liar, he enjoyed that most elusive of literary achievements – a bestseller that is also a critical and artistic triumph. As the main floor lights can be seen turned off and as Billy's bedroom lights upstairs can be seen turned on, the camera pans away from the house as the national anthem of Ambrosia starts playing. Baring in mind that this book was published way back in the 1950s so I feel that it fitted that time period more comfortably.

Viewed in this light, Billy Liar becomes potentially much more than a comic romp through northern English quaintness. He is engaged to two girls and in love with a third, and he constantly refers to a vague job offer writing scripts in London for comedian "Danny Boon". I can't stop laughing with Latin American humor but simply couldn't get in the same happy mood when presented with the British variety. While he sits in the hay in a Bethlehem type setting they bring him gifts and kneel as they present them.He left Osmondthorpe secondary modern at 14 and worked as a cobbler's assistant and then as a clerk for an undertaker before, in 1950, getting a job as a junior reporter on the Yorkshire Evening Post. And there is enough of a cliffhanger to keep you wanting to know: will Billy go to London (and leave his troubles and his two-and-a-half fiancees behind) or will he stay to face the music? We owe a debt of gratitude to the publisher Valancourt, whose aim is to resurrect some neglected works of literature, especially those incorporating a supernatural strand, and make them available to a newreadership. So underneath the mostly unfunny comedy is a sad familiar tale plus a whole ton of accurate detail about English provincial life in 1959, after Elvis but before the Beatles, and before the contraceptive pill too.

The series was shown on the Seven Network in Australia during the non-ratings season of 1975–1976, shown on CBC Television in Canada in 1975–1976, and shown on RTÉ 2 in Ireland in 1982. On the table nearest to us, next to the Witch’s handbag, there was a cup of black coffee, untouched. When I first saw the film in 1961 I was also intrigued by the glimpse it offered of a strange new world - the North of England! The dialogue throughout is a joy to read, from Billy's comedic routines with Arthur, to the rather surreal encounter with Duxbury on the Stradhoughton moor and the heated exchanges between him and his dad. Screen: 'Whistle Down the Wind' From Britain:Artful Story of Guest in a Barn Arrives (Published 1962)"– via NYTimes. He is stuck: he needs the boredom of the real world to keep his dearly beloved fictional world afloat. But Billy doesn’t change: he remains destructively irresponsible, with a childlike immaturity that seems incapable of recognising the inescapable consequences of his actions. So with the underage drinking, back-talking to parents, premarital sex and direct (at least for the 1950s) references to birth control, I imagine that this book was quite rebellious and ground-breaking in its day. He also wrote scores more novels and scripts, and speeches for politicians including Hugh Gaitskell and Harold Wilson.

This marvellous little novel covers a momentous Saturday in the life of nineteen-year-old Billy Fisher in a small town in Yorkshire.Characters [ edit ] William "Billy" Fisher Billy is 19, and living with parents Alice and Geoffrey, and his grandmother, Florence Boothroyd. A spur-of-the-moment decision by Billy has resulted in a problem with the firm's calendars remaining unposted nine months after the task of dispatching them to clients had been entrusted to him.
