About this deal

Watson is a country boy, long drawn to the bush. As the title promises, he does travel as part of the research for this history book. Published in 1987, My Place is an Australian classic and one of the earlier pieces of indigenous Australian literature: “Looking at the views and experiences of three generations of indigenous Australians, this autobiography unearths political and societal issues contained within Australia’s indigenous culture. Sally Morgan travelled to her grandmother’s birthplace, starting a search for information about her family. She uncovers that she is not white but Aborigine – information that was kept a secret because of the stigma of society.” In part two you’ll discover Indigenous tourism opportunities available in Australian states and the Torres Strait Islands. In late 2004, 36 year old local Indigenous man Cameron Doomadgee is arrested for swearing at a policeman on the street, or loudly singing a song, depending on who you ask. He loves his children and his wife, Tansy, but is a bit perplexed by her family, who seem to constantly impose on his life.

With its interactive approach and informative content, the guidebook provides children with a fun and insightful way to learn about the country’s geography, wildlife, culture, history, and more. Even though this book is targeted towards Americans (and it says it right in the title), this is an excellent book for anyone looking for a more fun read on this list. I won’t spoil what happens next, but this was a book that stayed with me a long while after I finished it. Through meat pies and lamingtons, Symons tells the history of Australia gastronomically. He challenges myths such as that Australia is ‘too young’ for a national cuisine, and that immigration caused the restaurant boom.”

Stella Franklin or Miles Franklin is one of Australia’s best loved authors – she has not one, but two notable awards named after her. The White Girl introduces us to Odette Brown and her granddaughter Sissy, who live in the fictional country town of Deane. The story paints a rich tapestry of characters who populate the bustling neighbourhood, each with their own dreams, struggles, and stories. Through Park’s eloquent writing, readers are immersed in the sights, sounds, and dynamics of Surry Hills, a place where poverty and adversity are met with resilience and a sense of community. On 07/January/1979, the Vietnamese Army using Russian built T-54 and T-59 tanks, assisted by some Cambodian patriots liberated Phnom Penh while the Pol Pot Government and its agencies fled into the jungle. A new government under Hun Sen was installed and the Khmer Rouge’s navy was sunk nine days later in a battle with the Vietnamese Navy which resulted in twenty-two Kampuchean ships being sunk. ...more” All cultural roads lead to Mona in January (for Mona Fofa, or Mofo for short) and June (for Dark Mofo) for Tasmania’s largest contemporary music festival.

The two important things that I did learn were that you are as powerful and strong as you allow yourself to be, and that the most difficult part of any endeavour is taking the first step, making the first decision. Highlights include “The Basin”, a family- friendly seawater pool, and the 20m Wadjemup Lighthouse on the island’s highpoint. Wadjemup is a Noongar word meaning “place across the water where the spirits are” – rather apt, given at least 373 unmarked graves hold the victims of a harsh and cruel prison for Aboriginal people operating during the 1800s. 19. Catch the Manly Ferry across one of the world’s greatest harbours These contemporary novels are the best books about Australia to read, if you’re after a novel which reflect this country as it is, today. This is one of the best books about Australia, in that it totally confuses fact with fiction. It’s that convincingly written. Carey’s prose captures the rawness and authenticity of Kelly’s voice, making the narrative both compelling and immersive. The novel challenges traditional portrayals of history and presents a nuanced exploration of Kelly’s motivations, as well as the complex relationships he had with his family, friends, and the authorities. He draws deep on First Nations traditions and his own personal insight, to offer up techniques to the reader on how they can best live and learn, as they walk the path of life.

This is one of the best books about Australia as far as a travel guide goes. It serves as a valuable companion for anyone looking to explore the diverse landscapes, cities, and cultural treasures of Australia. Bryson is one of my favourite writers, and this book is probably my favourite of his. A warm, funny, and wonderful look at my home country from an outsider’s perspective.Law is regularly compared to David Sedaris and his writing is similarly introspective, tongue-in-cheek and just downright funny. This Stella Prize winning book reads less like a feminist call to arms, than a modern day horror story. Accommodation is in ranger-supervised camps with architect-designed huts that are almost as good looking as the eye-popping coastal scenery.

The trilogy is an at-times moving, at others heartbreaking portrait of a family living in the slums of Sydney – the Darcys of Number Twelve-and-a-Half Plymouth Street. He believes he is doing ‘the right thing’, although he would be displacing yet another Indigenous child. Literati is a carefully curated book subscription service, that promises to deliver ‘the most dazzling and anticipated books to your door’. This epic Miles Franklin-winning novel follows two very different stories: Laura, a restless tourist who travels around the world before returning to Sydney to work for a travel-guide publisher; and Ravi, who flees to Australia on a tourist visa after his wife and son are murdered in Sri Lanka. Their individual struggles are used to explore much bigger themes of dislocation, cultural difference, exile, tourism and travel.
