About this deal

As much a literary guide as a walk through the lives of the Brontës, and a fascinating exploration of the changes that were wrought on this part of West Yorkshire during the Victorian period, Walking the Invisible is an essential companion on any visit to the beautiful countryside around Haworth. The walks cover some of the most beautiful scenery in West Yorkshire and step off the beaten-track of the traditional Bronte tourist trails. gripe was with Stewart’s reference to Edmund Robinson (husband to Lydia Robinson—the mistress of my novel’s title). The majority of the walks take in at least one of the Brontë Stones, as well as many of the other places said to have inspired the family’s writings.

He doesn’t shy away from talking about the social challenges and changes facing many of the towns, big and small, the Brontës lived in, and moves between education, political commentary, and personal anecdote seamlessly. As a disabled person, I won't be able to enjoy the walks detailed but I enjoyed vicariously walking them and learning their social history and influence. And with the help of an unlikely cast of Yorkshire’s inhabitants, Michael found himself falling further into their lives and writings than he could ever have imagined.

At the end of the book, the hand drawn maps of these trails are included, with interesting titbits of information, and quirky pencil-drawn pictures alongside.

To Walk Invisible is a British television film about the Brontë family that aired on BBC One on 29 December 2016. It's a wonderful mix of literary appreciation, literary history, memoir and slow-time travel (ie by foot), and mostly in Yorkshire! It is a reminder that the Brontes' work was rooted in the splendour and intensity of nature, and in the conflicts, passions, and complexity of ordinary people.
