Another journalist unimpressed was the Daily Mirror columnist Kevin O'Sullivan, who dismissed the programme by saying simply "BBC2's alleged comedy Inside No.Series 8 premiered on 22 December 2022 with a Christmas special, with the remaining five episodes airing from April 2023. Shearsmith professed excitement to be working on the programme, saying that "[b]eing in the middle of filming a third series of Psychoville would be utterly depressing". Since the late 20th century, the Ninth has been recorded regularly by period performers, including Roger Norrington, Christopher Hogwood, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.His understudy Jim (Shearsmith) has always wanted a starring role, and Jim's fiancée Laura ( Lyndsey Marshal) encourages him to push for Tony's job. Farce ensues when a group of France-bound train passengers find themselves sharing a sleeper carriage with a corpse.

The symphony emerged from other pieces by Beethoven that, while completed works in their own right, are also in some sense forerunners of the future symphony. However, the British anthology show Black Mirror, which also features elements of comedy and horror, was very popular around the time of Inside No.

On the same day, David Chater, writing in The Times, said of the series as a whole that "[i]t's hard to know which to admire more – the rich and perverse imaginations of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith or the extraordinary range of acting talent that has brought this strange and memorable series to life. Goofy comedy gives skillful ground to eerie phantasmic horror – and there’s a great guest turn from Alison Steadman. Pemberton and Shearsmith appear in all episodes, other than "3 by 3" in which neither appear, "The Harrowing" in which only Shearsmith appears, and "Last Gasp", featuring only Pemberton. In anecdotal reports, some people have reported developing cravings or feelings that they want to continue using nitrous oxide. The recapitulation (repeating of the melodic themes heard in the opening of the movement) further develops the exposition's themes, also containing timpani solos.
