About this deal

If you do one thing in Corfu Town it should be taking coffee or an aperitif at a shady table here. The Spianada. MV-U-7/19: KD Okvirni sporazum putovanja". zemun.rs (in Serbian). Zemun. 2019-06-01. p.7 . Retrieved 2020-01-10. The New Fortress has recently been restored and opened to the public (except on Tuesdays) although there’s not much to it beyond the walls of the structure. But it has excellent views and is sometimes used for concerts and exhibitions. Admission is free. Originally the Palace of St Michael and St George, it was built in 1815 by the British to be the residence of of the Lord High Commission.

In the Old Town, you’ll feel like an aristocrat walking along Liston Arcade and Spianada Square and gazing up at the Venetian forts and churches. And you’ll adore the romance of the labyrinth-like alleyways of Campiello (the medieval quarter of the Old Town) as well as the beat of the marching bands, particularly on festival days.

Sightseeing

Don’t miss the little monastery of Vlachernaand the tiny island Pontikonisi(also known as ‘Mouse Island) nearby (pictured above). This romantic spot is a 45-minute walk from Corfu Town and is close to Corfu Airport. In fact, so close there are a couple of bars perfectly set up to watch the planes land and the sun go down. Head away from the beach, inland, and you’ll discover ancient olive groves and timeless villages, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The island’s pristine coastline and family-friendly attractions ensure it’s the perfect destination for holidaymakers of all ages. Bohali village is a must-see, and its hillside location flaunts spectacular views over Zante Town. Or, take a boat trip around the stunning shorelines and discover the island’s wonders from the sea. Kavos Beach: Calling all party people! The fun never stops in Kavos, where you can go jet skiing during the day and party in the bars all night. Fly to:Corfu International Airport. Transfers take around 20 minutes to Corfu Town and 2.5 hours to Arillas, depending on your resort of course. Kavos is 1.5 hours away.

With its enchanting atmosphere it’s no surprise many will want to stay in the Old Town. Mostly you will find self-catered apartments for all budgets, with the more expensive ones right on the Liston looking out to the New Fortress. Try Liston Town House if that’s what you’re after. Traditional Villages. If you’re driving around the south of the island, stop by the inland town of Lefkimmi for a slice of traditional Greek life (and lunch).Argyrades, Lakones, Chlomas, Vatos, Pelekas village (up in the hills above the beach) and Afionas village are also charming. Hire a speedboatfor exploring the north east coast; many of the area’s best tavernas and beaches have jetties. The fish tavernas at Agni Bay are well known. Mandraki Marina and the Corfu Sailing Club are also located on the promontory. The Liston and the Spianada The Liston. There’s not too much choice in Corfu Town though, compared to the rest of the island. Many who enjoy being close to the delights of the city stay in one of the coastal suburbs slightly further out – Benitses, Kanoni, Perama, Gouvia– and make use of the bus service. Food and Drink in Corfu TownGlyfada Beach: There’s always something happening on the golden sands of Glyfada, a Corfu beach that buzzes with youthful energy. There’s a soft play set-up in the sea to keep little (and big) kids occupied.

Parking in the Old Town itself is limited but the main car parks are at the Spianada next to the Central Market. There are lots of small parking lots outside the Old Town as well as free parking on the roads – try alongside Garitsa Bay. Roda has a long and golden beach, which is situated alongside the village and is perfect for families and couples alike. It’s perfect if you enjoy a nice stroll in the sun, but like to stay in walking distance of bars and restaurants for when you want a delicious meal or refreshing drink. Corfu's coastline spans 217km (135mi) including capes; its highest point is Mount Pantokrator (906m (2,972ft)); and the second Stravoskiadi, at 849m (2,785ft). The full extent of capes and promontories take in Agia Aikaterini, Drastis to the north, Lefkimmi and Asprokavos to the southeast, and Megachoro to the south. Two islands are also to be found at a middle point of Gouvia and Corfu Bay, which extends across much of the eastern shore of the island; are known as Lazareto and Ptychia (or Vido). The protected area is home to over 120 species of birds and thousands of butterflies.

There a wide variety of resorts all around the coast, so there’s something to suit everyone here. And despite the number of visitors and developments, it has retained a wild beauty thanks to the rugged coastline which has charmed visitors for centuries (just look at the literature produced by the Durrells).

Immediately south of the Spianada you’ll find the Nautical Yacht Club and its restaurant/bar NAOK. There’s a small (very small) beach here too. The Mon Repos Estate is south of Garitsa. This beautiful 19th-century villa is famously where Prince Philip was born. These days it houses an archaeological museum. Entrance is free. There are a few small ancient ruins in the grounds. It’s harder to find, a little worn, and less impressive than the more popular Achilleon Palace but provides a nice shady walk for those staying in the city. The main domestic connections are to Igoumenitsa and Patras on the Greek mainland, and the islands Paxos and Antipaxos. From Lefkimmi there are also boats to Igoumenitsa. The most frequent ferries to the Diapondia islands are from Agios Stefanos (NW). There’s a strong Venetian element to the food on Corfu. You’ll find more Italian influences (and unique slow-cooked meat dishes) here than in other parts of Greece; pasta dishes, polenta, and tomato-based sauces are not uncommon.
