b) The poet calls her a genius because she could climb all kinds of trees, whether tall or wide, swiftly. In this post, we’re excited to share 5 original and unique poems about growing old gracefully, that explore the beauty and significance of aging with grace and dignity. Each poem offers a different perspective on what it means to grow old gracefully, from embracing life’s changes to finding joy in the journey. The best way to age is by being ourselves and not caring too much about what other people think about what we do and look like. Wright pictures himself as a guide, shepherding people through life to old age. In the poem, he uses harvest imagery to convey this. The pumpkins are rotted, the frost is on the ground. Still, he soldiers on through the night. Given the length of this poem, it may be wiser to choose an excerpt that your loved one would find humorous. You can write this in a card, read it to them, or post it on social media and tag them. 2. "The Old Man’s Complaints and How He Gained Them” by Robert Southey

Many people are taught, by example and by the media, to be terrified of old age. And it can be hard to imagine getting old when sitcoms and fearmongers claim that death, pain, and loneliness are the only things in old age. There are so many conflicting ideas. I can’t decide whether it means staying looking young as long as possible or letting nature take its course. A genius is someone with exceptional ability. What was grandma’s ability? What was exceptional about it? As they age, many older parents insist on keeping their independence. Even as you try to help, they may refuse. In this poem, the son offers money. The father refuses, saying that he doesn’t need it. Eventually, the son comes for advice. Both the narrator and his father were considerate towards grandma. This shows in the following lines. I really enjoyed all of the episodes buy Sherry Lever the dominatrix, Graham Walters the adventurer and Shirley Curry the gamer with her own YouTube channel really touched my heart. Fainlight, who was born in New York in 1931, is a poet, short-story writer and translator. She has lived in England since the age of 15. Her most recent book is Moon Wheels (2006). Each season brings its unique beauty, and so does every phase of our life. This poem draws parallels between nature’s seasons and the graceful transition of life stages as we grow older.

A collection of funny poems about old age by Paul Curtis, which focus on the physical and mental deterioration associated with the twilight years. The poems are intended to be gently humorous and warmly affectionate, not disrespectful or hurtful. (Just in case the grey panthers turn on Paul and tear him limb from limb) Don’t Throw Me On The Scrap Heap Shakespeare’s sonnet is full of pure flattery. He’s known his friend for three years. During that time, Shakespeare insists that his friend hasn’t aged a day. His friend has gained wisdom over the years, though, and that’s what counts. 9. "Youth and Age” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge The speaker says that his grandmother was a genius as she could climb trees. Spreading or high, she’d be up their branches in a trice. When last she climbed a tree, she was sixty-two. Ever since childhood, she’d had this gift for being happier in a tree than in a lift. And though, as years went by, she would be told that climbing trees should stop when one grew old, and that growing old should be graceful, she’d laugh and say, ‘Well, I’ll grow old disgracefully, I can do it better.’ The speaker says that when his granny was confined to bed, for her it was a brief season in hell. This line shows how wholeheartedly she loved climbing trees and how she missed the joy. There is also another line which is more direct in telling us how much the grandma loved trees – ‘Being happier in a tree than in a lift.’Granny was happier in the company of nature climbing trees, rather than use modern amenities like the lift. The suggestion could also include the idea that lift is the artificial and unhealthy mode used by us to avoid climbing the stairs. The poem is about renouncing the hold of the world upon us, and attaining something higher than the physical or sensual. When I was younger, I rebelled by being a punk. I dyed my hair, wore outrageous clothes and didn’t care what others thought. Then when I got older with a responsible job and commitments, I felt I had to conform. This lasted for a while before the rebel inside me had had enough. Now I am deciding how I want to look. How I want my hair and the clothes, I want to wear.

According to The Lady, women over 50 should not be wearing miniskirts, skyscraper heels, false eyelashes, fake tan, leather trousers, baseball caps or glitter of any sort. Oh, and being wrinkle-free in your 50s and 60s is most important. Although Nurture Replenish Skincare sponsors this article so they would say that, wouldn’t they? The speaker does not call his grandma childish. He calls her a genius because he admires her ability to climb trees of all sizes. He can understand her passion for climbing trees and does not consider it disgraceful. Life’s beauty is magnified when witnessed with a loved one. This poem draws inspiration from the imagery of a sunset, representing the culmination of a day, just as aging together signifies the culmination of a shared lifetime.Grandma considered the quiet week in bed a brief season in hell because she wasn’t able to leave the bedroom and go out, let alone climb a tree. It’s perhaps this emphasis on individualism that has made Advanced Style so popular with younger people. As Cohen puts it: “[Iris] comes from a time before ‘fast fashion’, where you wouldn’t come across hundreds of people wearing the same thing. It’s interesting because personal style has really become a commodity. Many of the women I photograph say that everyone is trying to look different these days, yet they all end up looking the same. I agree with Iris’s pro-individual sense of dressing and I believe that any creative act can be a form of personal expression.” Or, as Iris herself has said: “When you don't dress like everybody else you don't have to think like everybody else.”
