a b " Top RPM Adult Contemporary: Issue 1936." RPM. Library and Archives Canada. Retrieved March 29, 2015.This burbling tension around gender roles during WWII, when women were entering the work force in large numbers for the first time, is really the film’s primary subject. The AAGPBL players are at one point likened to Rosie the Riveter to drive the point home. They’re are at once sexualized and infantilized, trotted out in uniforms with short skirts for gawking male spectators while off the field they are lorded over by a chaperone to ensure they maintain their image of moral purity. Marshall treats these issues comically, with the same ultra-light touch she brings to the rest of the film, and while one could reasonably object that turning the subjugation of women into a crowd-pleasing comedy reflects a rather superficial approach to the subject, it can also be easy to underestimate the difficulty of pulling it off. Theresa from Murfreesboro, TnYes Madonna can sing a ballad. Loved the video, she is remarkable when she allows herself to be vulnerable.

I barely remember that the song and the movie had any relationship. A League Of Their Own is an antic gee-whiz period piece about triumphant women in a different time, while “This Used To Be My Playground” is a morose torch ballad. Also, nobody ever refers to a baseball field as a “playground.” There’s some sad nostalgia at the end of League, so maybe “Playground” didn’t make a terribly incongruous end-credits song. But I just don’t associate that song with Tom Hanks yelling that there’s no crying in baseball. They exist completely independently of each other in my mind. There’s no overlap. Maybe that’s me. The song’s legacy can be seen in its continued popularity. It is often used in movies and television shows, and many young fans discover the song and fall in love with it years after its initial release. 7.
