Sharp ridges of lead white paint along their forms indicate that Rembrandt used a palette knife in creating them, a technique not otherwise evident in this painting, but one that Rembrandt began exploiting during the mid-1660s. Christopher French, a psychology professor at Goldsmiths, University of London, said the first thing that came to mind when he thought about the Hat Man was Freddy Krueger from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

Even more intriguing, the description varies only slightly from one culture to another — he’s sometimes 6 feet tall and other times 10; his eyes might be bright red or deep pools of darkness; some people claim he carries a golden pocket watch or is “ mist-like” rather than a solid figure. Negative beings or earthbound spirits can thrive off of emotional conflict, pain, self-hatred, and addictions, to name a few. Because of the limited information we have, I don't want to create unnecessary fear and misunderstanding about these types of beings. Rembrandt van Rijn, Syndics of the Cloth Drapers' Guild, 1662, oil on canvas, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. You may not have heard of the Hat Man, but there’s a chance he’s found his way into your dreams once or twice. Rembrandt originally had depicted the gentleman with an even longer collar and with his hands in quite different positions. The sitter's hairstyle and costume, particularly his wide, flat collar with its tassels, are similar, as is the self-assured gravity that he projects as he focuses his eyes on the viewer from beneath his wide-brimmed black hat.

Are there sometimes otherworldly confines he’s working within that force him to use a secondary source (the mirror) to watch his victims…or is it somehow amplifying his gaze?

Unlike his depictions of conservative Amsterdam merchants from the earlier 1630s such as Portrait of Dirck Jansz. He received many commissions and attracted a number of students who came to learn his method of painting. My independent streak is why I don't have an agent or a publisher or a boss with the exception of my guardian angel.
