Arran has soaring hills and rugged coasts, rich farmland and dense forests, all concentrated into a compact parcel floating in the Firth of Clyde between the Ayrshire coast and the Kintyre peninsula. It’s known as ‘Scotland in miniature’, as it shares some of the characteristics of the Highlands and Lowlands, the mainland and the Western Isles.

A year later and a one year old was released, of course not technically a whisky, it was released as ‘Arran 1 Year Old Spirit’, and showed great promise for a spirit still in its proverbial adolescence. The core expressions include a ten year old, officially released in 2006, and a cask-strength, the ominously named ‘100 Proof’. Yearly single cask special editions are released, finished in either sherry or bourbon butts. Some interesting finishes have also been released, including a Bordeaux, a port and a Calvados.

The state of the art visitor centre, opened in 1997 by HM the Queen, offers daily tastings,a shop and CASKS Cafe which servesan interesting and appetising menu based on the best of local produce available. Due to current government regulations, all tastings and CASKS Cafe bookings must be pre-aranged in advance. In 1994 Arran Distillers was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas and a D-Day veteran, with the intention of building a distillery on Arran. [2] During the construction of the distillery, a pair of golden eagles built their nest on a cliff near the distillery; since golden eagles are a protected species, construction of the distillery was temporarily halted. The distillery, funded by private investors and the sale of bonds, opened in 1995.saw the release of a 15th anniversary bottling, released on the distillery open day on 3 July. Autumn 2010 also saw the release of the first official 14 year old to be released by the distillery. The first peated Arran single malt, Machrie Moor, has been available since December 2010. This geography is key to the character of our whisky. On this island, we make a spirit that reflects a range of regional influences, yet achieves a rare and unique personality all its own. Rather like the island itself.

Arran water” was the term given to the illicit liquid that was smuggled across to the mainland at the height of the island’s distilling period. It was then regarded as the best that could be had. Any new distillery needs a good water source for production. So, when Harold Currie sought after a dependable source of water for the Arran distillery, he was helped by a local property owner and his geologist son. Having assessed the water from Loch na Davie, high up Gleann Eason Boirach to the east of Lochranza, they found it to be perfect for their purposes. Supposedly, it is the purest natural water source in Scotland. This water flow ran adjacent to the parcel of land Currie had acquired. It was here that the distillery would be built.

Machrie Moor er en medium røget whisky (på 20 ppm) der indeholder meget mere end blot tjære og bolværk. After all, demand for smuggled whisky was on the rise and Arran had excellent links to Glasgow. There is some evidence that molasses was also distilled here. When the law changed, a legal distillery ran at Lagg from 1825, but it closed in 1837 and Arran’s distilling heritage was seemingly lost forever. Amid closures and overproduction, you’d think the last thing any investor would do would be to open a new whisky distillery in Scotland, never mind opening one on the Isle of Arran. At this stage in the 1990s, no one really anticipated the boom we are currently experiencing.
