Alright, so to address the growing amount of questions I’m getting through various messaging platforms regarding which lens to choose from, I decided to do a small VERY non-scientific head-to-head of my favourite four fast 35mm lenses that I use on my Fujifilm systems. You can also note the slight exposure difference between the two that I outlined further up the article. Think of them as old Soviet lenses without the supply chain problems and with modern coatings, and they're winners.
to be very cinematic, its just lovely for video production as well, don`t just think stills, film making is where these lenses come into there own. It comes with a slip-on lens cap which I really like it sticks on satisfyingly and the filter thread is a very small 43 millimeters in diameter. The sharpness is also best at close ranges, and you can definitely see declining resolution at the furthest distances.
on the Leica, as such the out of focus rendering isn’t quite as overbearing or prominent feeling in equivalent photos. II interesting low cost, very high-quality assembly, a large number of aperture blades and a maximum aperture ratio of 1: 1. is poor at close distances, that is true but the fact is once you step back further from the subject, be prepared to see all the details coming in and this lens can produce excellent details too. The difference in minimum focus distance is so minute that you will not notice it in day-to-day use.
Although the lens really fails to render detail at fast apertures, somehow the images still turn out looking cool. That being said, it’s certainly not the perfectly smooth and creamy bokeh some people seem to strive for. One problem that couldn’t be fixed in Lightroom was the lens flare, which was a constant threat while shooting on the bright afternoon of my tests. It balances well on the Fujifilm X-E3 I’m using, which was the body used for all the sample photos in this review. was excellent to handle, as with all third-party lenses without any electronic contacts, one needs to remember to enable the ‘Shoot without a lens’ setting on the camera.
Performance according to specs isn’t great, but the lens has some very beautiful character, especially wide open.

But, by the way, I have seen other photographers doing the same in a different way: paying for extra expensive lenses and covered them partially with transparent plastic bags to make the images look not too sharp at the edges… At the end it’s the creation process involved using tools, perfect or imperfect but bringing that magic we want to make. I’ve upped the overall contrast of the images in this post which of course hides it a bit, but you can still see the impact of the lower wide open contrast.But I have to say again that the flaring that this lens produces is absolutely stunning and can be used to great effect. Admittedly, that little marvel from Miyazaki covers the full 35mm image circle while this is exclusively an APS-C lens. This lens is tiny in comparison to other X-mount lenses, and many other reviewers have fondly referred to the classic 35mm Sonnar lens when describing the 7Artisans 35/1. produces soft images wide open, but one would be foolish to expect more from a lens this small and this fast. It’s fine for portraits or just having fun, but you won’t really be getting a lot of detail unless you’re shooting close to infinity where sharpness improves considerably.
