About this deal

Finally, after years of effort from hundreds of dedicated artists, it’s finally here. The release of this game is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of the Santa Monica Studio team. Games are the result of a collective effort, and art is just one aspect of it. The art team at Santa Monica Studio is constantly encouraged to work together with other departments to overcome challenges and create something truly remarkable.

It’s dumb, but then, no more so than any other aspect of video game development that’s steeped in legal bullshit. Anyway! Hopefully that answers any questions you may have had over the last decade and change as to why these features run weeks, months and sometimes even years after a big game is released; the answer is usually because it took that long for artists to be allowed to share their stuff publicly! Atreus in the last game had some pops of color. In God of War Ragnarök he looks to have leaned in a lot more to bright colors. What made the team want to go this direction with his design? We always imagined Gods have a stronger resilience to the cold than the humans in Midgard. With her single motivation to kill Kratos she has neglected any other mortal needs. The flame of anger she feels towards Kratos is all she needs to keep her warm while on the hunt. You can see that reflected in the way things are stitched, the choice of materials, and being more thoughtful on how they are surviving the extreme weather conditions. To celebrate our release date announcement, we’ve also revealed the brand-new God of War Ragnarök – Father and Son CG Trailer! To see a glimpse of the dangers Kratos and Atreus could find themselves up against as Ragnarök approaches, make sure you watch it in this PlayStation Blog article. Brok’s Dice Set – This dice set comes with a metallic silver finish with blue detailing. The dice bag features the Huldra Brothers’ brand. The Norse God of War and another son of Odin, Tyr sought peace with the Giants and tried to help keep them safe against his family, especially his father. Tyr traveled all over the world collecting relics and treasures from different cultures and was widely beloved by anyone he met. At some point, Odin had Tyr imprisoned and allowed rumors that he was killed to spread. His martial skill is unknown, but he is the Norse God of War so we can make some assumptions.

The game is one of the best games out there, and this artbook is one of the best video game artbooks this year. When Thor’s design was shown after the first God of War Ragnarök trailer, the internet exploded (just a bit) with discussions. Were you expecting our take on Thor to be such a hot topic among gamers? Ultimately, I think that God of War: Ragnarok is an incredible example of a sequel that invests our built-in emotions and turns that investment into a big narrative pay-off. Those who hoped that this game would deliver a satisfying conclusion to the story, worlds, and characters they previously fell in love with will not be disappointed by this game. In so many ways, Ragnarok is that rare sequel that delivers everything we expect from a truly great sequel. It expertly continues an existing story while standing tall enough on its own. There’s not much more we can ask for from a sequel than that. The artworks are absolutely beautiful and there is a lot to see. The 3D sculpts are amazingly detailed, as are most of the artworks. The text is quite sparse and just enough to give you some insight to the designs. They have put together a wealth of resources for cosplayers to reference alongside the official cosplay guides, not to mention they’ll be releasing videos documenting key parts of their creation process on their own channels. Interview with Art Director Raf Grassetti Is there any aspect of Kratos’ design for God of War Ragnarök that you are especially proud of or want players to notice? Along with making sure we get the overall look we want for any character we also enjoy layering in small hints and design details. Thor’s goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr, make an appearance in the bottom gold carved cap of Thor’s hammer. Keen-eyed players and cosplayers will also notice there are other goat motifs reflected in his design. While Ragnarok’s best moments offer nearly unrivaled immersion, those far-too-frequent trips into the games menus and submenus often break that immersion.

Not only are her tattoos yellow as mentioned before, but you can also see other pops of yellow woven through her hair, in some of the stitching of her clothing, and in the bronze jewelry she wears. These were all layered throughout her design to give a consistent, but subtle, reference to the Giants. When it comes to visual storytelling, what aspects of Atreus’ character are most important to convey through his design? Elements of her appearance were designed to look unkempt as we imagined she has spent sleepless days and nights in her endless pursuit of Kratos. Covered in a layer of dirt to show her rough living, we also smudged the kohl around her eyes intentionally made to resemble tears to show that behind all that anger there’s a layer of sadness she can’t escape from. As one of the last living Giants, she represents that part of Atreus’s heritage which is something no one else can share with him. Not only does she carry with her the knowledge of her people, but she also physically carried individually carved marbles that contained the souls of the Giants. In a post-show stream following Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase, Barlog and Williams said that changing directors was usually a tradition at Sony Santa Monica and that the switch would bring a fresh perspective to Ragnarök.

The evolution of God of War's Atreus

God of War Ragnarök is a direct sequel to the 2018 God of War game and sees both Kratos and his son Atreus returning. The game is set a few years after the events of the last game, where the freezing winds of Fimbulwinter have come to Midgard. When we first meet Freya again, she is living on Midgard in the heights of Fimbulwinter. Did the harsh climate influence any aspects of her design? Since God of War Ragnarök is a sequel, we knew we didn’t want to completely change Kratos, a lot of the choices made were to update his look to reflect the new setting. We decided to preserve his right pauldron and keep his iconic tattoos visible. We’re worked with our fantastic character artists and writers at SMS, as well as B is for Boy artist Romina Tempest, to create guides that not only give the in-depth references necessary for cosplayers, but also let us play more in the world of God of War by looking at these designs through the lens of our characters.
