If functionality and durability are most important to you, you can't go wrong with the Osprey Sojourn Porter 46! Osprey’s lightest travel pack, the Farpoint can be carried like a backpack but packed like a suitcase. The Farpoint 55 Trek is ideal if you’re looking for a bag that you can use for travel and potentially for trekking as well.

Clearly, Osprey agrees as they’ve equipped the Farpoint 55 with an inconspicuous rescue whistle right on the chest strap.You can unravel a flap at the bottom of the pack with a zipper closure to encase the shoulder straps and hip belt, which is handy if you check the bag as it ensures that nothing happens to the straps in transit. They do look a bit similar in pictures, but the Farpoint is absolutely NOT as structured or as stiff as the Porter. However, if you don’t care about the day pack, you can save some money by getting Osprey Farpoint 40.

The back panel is quite flat so that it can easily attach to the mothership backpack, but that also makes it less comfortable than a curved or padded back. Inside the main cargo bag is a mesh pocket ideal to separate dirty clothes and shoes and internal compression strapsfully maximise the capacity whilst securing your gear. The manufacture of sustainable products is characterised by the reduction or elimination of harmful chemicals.

The Farpoint 55 includes a removable 15 litre daypack and then a 40 litre main pack giving lots of options for varying trips. I discovered that the Osprey Farpoint’s storied reputation as one of the best backpacks for travel is very valid, but it still might not be the best fit for every traveler. That being said, we at HPL have heard repeatedly of travelers who have always been allowed to take their Farpoint 55 as carry-on luggage on both domestic and international flights. The frame of the pack is designed to distribute the weight of your bag evenly while making it easy for you to move around. While the Farpoint has a stiff outer rim on the back, the walls don’t really stand up when it’s empty, so it’s a more flexible pack.
