Making music to feel good may not sound like a revolutionary ethos for a pop album, but it subverts the very essence of FKA twigs’ previous output. When we last heard from her in 2019, with her sophomore release MAGDALENE , she was creating “pop,” but drenched the genre in the uncanny and grotesque, and drowned it in the pain she was going through at the time. Instead of staying in that darkness, comprised of health challenges and physical and emotional trauma , three years later, twigs has returned with CAPRISONGS : a project that centers joy. Contains an interpolation of "You're Not Alone" (T. Kellett / R. Taylor-Firth). Used by permission. But although friskiness is very much on her mind, it’s impossible to hear Caprisongs without reference to trauma. Just over a year ago, twigs – born Tahliah Debrett Barnett – went public with a lawsuit against her former partner, an infamous US actor, for sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress. If twigs’s previous album, Magdalene (2019), was a conceptual deep-dive into the historical figure of Mary Magdalene conducted through left-field digitals, Caprisongs collates a set of more ephemeral pop tunes in which twigs broadcasts selfhood 17 ways, finding unexpected common sonic ground with artists such as Grimes, Charli XCX and Self Esteem. Magdalene pivoted around a neglected herstory; Caprisongs is both intimately autobiographical and keen to display how twigs, until now something of a cult figure, is actually very much up for wider worship.

Smith’s performance is a standout on Caprisongs; the rest of the collaborations yield mixed results. The Afrobeats single “jealousy” is the most easygoing song of the lot, but seems basic in comparison to everything else; Nigerian singer Rema’s appearance is nice but unremarkable. The gospel-tinged “careless,” with Canadian R&B singer Daniel Caesar, features some divine harmonies but is ultimately too slow-moving and tasteful. More fun-loving is the Shygirl-assisted “papi bones,” which sounds like a hammy SoundCloud remix of Y2K dancehall, air horns and all. If twigs’ objective was to stop overthinking and simply try out ideas in the studio, then “papi bones” preserves a nice spontaneity. Over a year ago, twigs filed a lawsuit accusing her ex-boyfriend of abuse, and her 2019 album MAGDALENE was, in part, about the racist vitriol she experienced from outsiders in a prior relationship. She has spoken about her desire to be written about as her own entity, not attached to a partner: “My work was so beautiful. It was so much louder than my love life. It is so much louder.” Caprisongs is the sound of twigs in the driver’s seat as she traverses her own curiosities and instincts; there is no man looming over the music, no weighty public narrative dictating its terrain. It is intrepid and light, the image of a woman attuned to planetary alignments but casting her own fate. The first single, The Weeknd-featuring “tears in the club,” is a catchy anthem for healing through dance, with a hypnotizing video featuring cathartic revelry. Another standout, “honda,” also comes early in the record, with FKA twigs leaning into a rap cadence to match fellow British artist Pa Salieu. Later on the mixtape, MAGDALENE -esque “minds of men” is a return to floating falsetto form for twigs. Even with its moments of melancholy, as a whole, the project has a buoyancy that LP1 and MAGDALENE never reached. FKA Twigs is releasing her Caprisongs mixtape on vinyl for the first time, via Young this September. A surprising and refreshing "album" from twigs, that sounds like she is having the absolute time of her life recording this fun collection. The outro to Oh My Love declares the importance of knowing your worth, of a piece with Self Esteem’s recent LP Prioritise Pleasure. The dreamy music-box tune Lightbeamers starts like a series of notes to self: “Did you give yourself away, again? Don’t do it again.” The album features a ton of songs played across all Australian community radio stations, triple j and by any club DJ worth their salt.
