It moves from the launch in Belfast to life at sea, with copies of menus, then on to the sinking, the rescue of survivors, the operation to recover bodies, and the two public enquiries into the disaster.

The book does a terrific job explaining the history behind it and all the other artifacts on board the Titanic that might have played a part in the sinking. It was nice to know more about them and learn what they were like and their duties, giving humanity to each face including the captain. I have not read any book that focus solely on the omens some passengers reported feeling beforehand. It further goes on to analyze the stories of hundreds of people who lost their lives, and the international efforts taken to prevent a repeat of such a disaster. Almost every Titanic video and documentary was watched over and over again to try and find the answers to the questions which the following pages raise.

He has contributed a number of articles for The New Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and his book Rorke’s Drift: The Zulu War, 1879 has been re-printed seven times. In a way it's perfect; the whole tale is a meta-story because part of the text is about, 'Sure, when you've got it, use it, enjoy your life, but know it will end, be aware of it' - it's almost like a sort of curse.
