But the more empowered the girls become, the more school administrators become determined to stop them.I have to say, I would've appreciate a bit more actual intersectionality, rather than characters just talking about it. Moxie should open the door to serious and honest discussions between teens (both girls and boys) and their parents about what constitutes sexual harassment and what can be done if that culture exists in their school. I’m hanging up some of my mom’s simple sundresses when my eye catches on a fat, beat-up shoe box she keeps on her closet’s top shelf.

The final act though, offers hope for her to change – the walkout and protest means she finally has to talk Mitchell’s behavior seriously and there is hope that she will learn from her mistakes. He definitely has his slip ups where he just doesn’t understand due to not experiencing the sexism that the girls in his classes have, but when Viv takes the time to explain, *he listens and learns.With a story that’s equal parts heart and instruction manual, Mathieu has captured the movement of a generation—warts and all—and shone a light forward for the next one. There’s also a very accelerated timeline in the movie, which is sad in some ways, but honestly necessary to the pace of the movie. It’s Claudia, though, that officially registers Moxie so the gang can put up posters in the hallways, a move which ultimately results in her suspension from school – a very grave outcome from her family’s perspective. I definitely feel like I was right, when I watched it (a couple of weeks ago now, around when it came out), I ended up feeling similarly to when I finished the book.

Principal Shelly (Marcia Gay Harden) overhears Emma's speech and finally moves to confront Mitchell about the allegation.I can sort of see why removing it allows the movie to focus more on feminism and less about favouritism and “the promise of a young athlete”, and also removes the comments at the end about how awful he was as a principal. It is so empowering and heartwarming to see these high school girls banding together to fight back against the sexism they face on a daily basis.

I filed that away and got on with the important business of f*cking things up: a-levels, a marriage, various jobs. God, I don't even know if I would've given someone a chance to redeem themselves from some of the things said in this book.Vivian befriends Lucy, as well as a group of other girls who have been put down, but her best friend Claudia is reluctant to get behind the movement and it causes a rift between them. The writing felt very young at times, and I actually had to remind myself several times that Viv was a junior in high school, because a lot of her wording and inner monologues just felt more like they were coming from a 14- or 15-year-old, at most.
