AGE 15+: Ransom Notes: House Party Edition is designed to be perfect for both family groups and adult game nights alike — the prompt cards are appropriate for most teen family groups, but players can decide how clean or inappropriate to make the game depending on their answers. A few of the cards pretty explicit (“Walk us through the masturbation process,” for instance, and “Ask your boss for a promotion in exchange for sexual favors”). It’s easy enough to just toss any cards and magnets you don’t want in your game (the FAQs say about 15-30% of the cards are not PG), but it’s something to know about ahead of time, depending on who’s going to play. The winner takes the ransom card and the first person to win 5 cards is the winner. It really is that simple. ComponentsThe game continues until one of the players can’t make a sentence with the word magnets that they have remaining. This phase of the current round should last around 60-90 seconds. Players can decide whether they want to strictly follow the time limit with a timer, or if they want to be more lenient with it. The game ends once one of the players have acquired five Prompt Cards due to providing the best response in the round. The first player to acquire five Prompt Cards wins the game. This player has acquired five Prompt Cards. They have won the game. Alternative Ransom Notes Modes Party Gamer PLAYERS: While the game is made for 3-6 players, it’s equally hilarious when larger groups team up together. 30-90 min play time. The game lists itself as 17+, and after a thorough inspection, I can see why. Even the most innocuous words can become hilarious and/or twisted around, but they’ve also included a handful of body parts (“butt”, “booty,” “boob,” “ass,” “genital”), activities (“murder,” “sex,” “seduce”), and other words in the magnets that one may or may not want to set aside (“bitchy,” “sexy”). Also about 20 of the prompt cards (less than a sixth) could be considered somewhere on a scale of silly (“Why is cocaine illegal?”) to direct references to sex acts and porn. And one weird Bernie Sanders reference. You can easily remove these and still have a lot of cards to play with. Review

To determine who will be the judge for the round, spin the bottom of the box which you placed in the middle of the table. Along one of the sides of the box it says “you’re the judge”. The player that is closest to where this side of the box is pointing becomes the judge for the current round. The box has been spun. The player that the “you’re the judge” side is pointing towards, becomes the judge for the current round.

Aside from a few choice cards the game can be as risqué or ‘clean’ as you make it with your phrase productions. Sure, to play with teens you might need to go through and take out some of those aforementioned cards with a more adult theme but to make the game 17+ seems a little odd. I mean it just doesn’t have the same “gosh that’s rude” feeling you get when playing Cards Against Humanity. Okay so I don’t actually say “golly gosh” in my general vocabulary but I’m not a rude party games type of player and I found this to be just fine for my temperament. Turn your game nights into hours of ever-fresh hilarity, tears, and drop your face with the word magnet party game that will have your friends creating unbelievably terrible phrases you'll never forget! Each round begins with the top Prompt Card being flipped over. It doesn’t matter who flips it over. One of the players will read the text on the card out loud. The round then begins. If the Prompt Card refers to the most recent judge, your submission should relate to the player that was the judge in the previous round. For this round all of the players will write a jingle for a toupee store. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items.

The most fun part is that there is no restriction on how many or few words to use in responses, and the prompts range from straightforward "write a new slogan for Applebee's" to nearly insane complexity for the limited space and vocabulary available: "write a note to explain to the waitress that the bathroom fan is broken". Some ppl squeeze many tiles onto the plate in an attempt to be clear, while others opt for pithy minimalism. Results in both directions are hilariously stilted and creatively vague. Ransom notes are perfect for adult game nights, quirky holiday gifts, and hilarious birthday gifts for smart people. The game is rated 17+ for mature content, but can easily be made family-friendly by removing some of the prompt cards. The judge will consider all of the submissions and decide which one they think is the best. They can choose any of the submissions including their own.

Once you painstakingly separated all the magnetic words. And some are tiny! My poor chubby little fingers could not cope with I or it’s and other 1 to 4 letter words. Grab a handful aiming for around 75 but you don’t have to count, unless you know, you have to, in which case this is going to be a looooong game! Laying out the words in your play area can be a little time consuming and I’ve not yet found a method that works well for grouping and finding words easily to use so I’ve tended to group by word length. Every round was amusing, and some were hilarious. Some of the answers were downright brilliant, and it was so entertaining to see different players’ personalities expressed in their answers as they read out them out. Delivery also played an important part in how the responses were received. As with other games of this nature, there are many variations: you can play rounds with a specific restriction, like 3 tiles or less, or write your own prompts in layered rounds of difficulty. Turn over the first challenge card, read it aloud to everyone and then frantically begin making your ‘ransom note’ type response. There are a few suggested ways to judge who wins the round but mostly I play with a friendly bunch so we take an honest vote accepting if someone else’s response is genuinely better than our own we vote for it. However, if you are playing with particularly competitive people who will always vote for their own, even if it’s rubbish there are other suggested ways to choose a winner to avoid creating war not peace. Once everyone has read their entry, a judge for the round is randomly chosen, and he decides whose entry is funniest and best, and that person wins the round. Everyone replenishes their word magnets and they play another round. Whoever wins five rounds wins the game.
