The ported sub that provides the foundation for the system is built from 0.75-inch ply and houses a 12-inch speaker protected by a perforated steel grille. Three handles are provided for ease of carrying, which is welcome as the sub weighs a hint over 20kg. Consisting of a 15 mm wooden, ported, powered subwoofer enclosure that houses a 12” subwoofer capable of a functional frequency output down to 37 Hz. The bi-directional aluminium pole’s connection to the subwoofer is secured using a magnet, and the column array is gravity-held to the sub pole. The signal is internally routed to the components.

A man wanted to do a Bob Dylan song (I forgot which one), when he was done, he looked at me and said "wow, I can actually hear the guitar and harmonica". Needless to say, he was impressed. And this was a song he's sang at other places. Apparently, those other speakers didn't bring out the details, harmonics, and nuances in the music like the Evolve 50 does. All the controls are integrated into the mixer section, which includes DSP for setting the voicing, making key adjustments and, in multi-speaker systems, entering any necessary delay to compensate for a maximum of 100 metres of spacing. A simple one-knob/turn-and-press system is used to navigate and adjust the DSP parameters. EV50M is a super high quality product, works very well and reliably. For about a month of use, I've never had such a single failure on anything with this system (unlike e.g. JBL). Also the mobile app is very reliable and well working. Kudos EV for the high quality product. Als Alleinunterhalter (Keys, Vocal, Sax) hat dieses Setup jedoch oft ein sehr einnehmendes Wesen, was den Platz betrifft (Bühne und Transport gleichermaßen 🏋️‍♀️ ). Die Sounds des Keys leiden ein wenig unter dem Mono-Mix beim Einsatz nur einer Säule. Das ist aber nicht das Problem oder die Schuld der EV50 sondern dem Einsatz nur einer Säule geschuldet. Die Ev Evolve 50 ist klanglich wirklich überragend. Sehr transparent ohne die Höhen zu sehr in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen. Auch die Wiedergabe im Mittenbereich war für ein Säulensystem einfach sehr gut. Instrumente sind differenzierbar und im Stereobetrieb auch gut ortbar. The Mix output sends a mix of all the channels, unless you reconfigure it via the DSP menu to do otherwise, whereas the Link-out XLR carries channel 1’s signal only. Bluetooth pairing for music streaming or app control is also handled via the DSP menu, and the app will only respond if one or more Evolve 50 systems are within range with their Bluetooth turned on. The iPad version of the app is free from the iTunes App Store and requires iOS version 10 or above. A version for Android Marshmallow (and above) tablets and smartphones is available from the Google Play Store. OperationPortable column-style sound systems have been around for many years, but US veterans Electro-Voice may have just perfected the art. I, like Mr. Scott, also have two Evolve 50 speakers. And for me, it's the best speaker system I've ever owned in my life. Before purchasing them, I had the Turbosound IP2000. The sound quality just wasn't there. Returned them. Listened to just about every line array system including JBL, Bose, RCF, Peavey (which I also used to own), and let me tell you, my boy... the Evolve 50 blows them all away. And if you think that I'm exaggerating, I'm sure Mr. Scott can confirm that.

Ergonomically designed handles on both the array and the sub to enhance portability. Angled interface gives user easy access to make adjustments and connections on input panel. EV says the lower phantom power is designed for the lower power requirements of condenser microphones, and restricted so it doesn’t blow up your mixer outputs if you happen to plug one in while phantom is on. It’s a fair enough call, but I still think if you’re going to have phantom power onboard, it may as well work. Rounding out the input section, the screen defaults to show input meters for all three channels. It’s a nice touch to see whether you’re peaking. Wireless Control & Monitoring The sound heard from behind the column is, predictably enough, predominantly lows and low mids, though our vocalist thought it clear enough that he could manage without a monitor if necessary. The free app communicated with the speaker without any problems, though we didn’t need to use it as we were utilising a separate mixer.
