About this deal

Part Jonah and the Whale, part lesson on where and who you came from, part making it through the grieving process – it’s a story unlike any other I’ve read. Listings categorize the novel as literary fiction, drama, adventure, science fiction, horror, and more. The rest of this suspenseful, claustrophobic tale speeds by as Jay discovers he has only an hour’s worth of air — not to mention how to figure out how to escape the whale itself. The narrative centers on Jay’s experiences as a seventeen-year-old dealing with life following the passing of his father Mitt Gardiner.

Book Review: ‘Whalefall,’ by Daniel Kraus - The New York Times

This was such a great book that was well written, fast paced, thought provoking, shocking and moving. Each chapter is either titled with a reading on his air tank, to tell you how much air Jay has left, or a year, marking a flash back. Andy Weir’s The Martian, for its minute-by-minute account of survival, and the movie Gravity, which is how I wanted Whalefall to feel — like the protagonist is fighting the odds at a cosmic level. Through the intricate web of human emotions, Kraus deftly constructs a tale about Jay Gardiner, a young man troubled by his father’s legacy.

Even my experts confessed that I had a bit of leeway, because so much remains unknown about sperm whale behavior. And here we are, in August, and I believe I've just finished the most disappointing novel of the year. io9: There’s something very alien about a lot of deep sea creatures; how did you approach writing details to work in a way that seems both plausible and otherworldly in their strangeness? The pacing is relentless, the awe astounding, and the tension palpably constricting, even as Kraus takes time to provide necessary details both scientific and visceral. Daniel Kraus has crafted an extraordinary primordial adventure that is equal parts moving character study and edge-of-your-seat thriller,” said Lunder and Mandelbaum in a statement to Deadline.

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus | Goodreads

His late dad committed suicide earlier in the year, launching himself overboard into the deep blue ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. While the main action here is the incident with the whale, what this is really about is the complicated relationship between Jay and Mitt, father and son.

It’s a tale about a young man who has given up on life — only to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places. DK: In November 2020, I saw this video of two kayakers who briefly landed in the mouth of a humpback whale.
