Infinity's virtual box of toys lets you play with those toys in two different ways. First, characters get their own sections of the game, called Play Sets. These are dedicated games that put characters within their own universe. In this case, it's the Avengers fighting off Frost Giants in the Avengers Tower. Any of the Avengers will work within this Play Set, but other Infinity characters (as varied as Merida from Brave and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch) cannot. Figures from previous sets will work on newer versions of the game in Toy Box mode, though Playset pieces will not work with other versions of the game. Figures released with a corresponding Play Set can enter than story, but all characters can be played in the Toy Box. For instance, only Sulley, Mike, and Randy can play in the Monsters University Play Set. Assemble your mightiest friends for fun 2 player offline and 4 player online multiplayer adventures with characters from the Marvel Universes.

The base has remained the same in all versions of the game, so if you already own the base you can buy the game digitally or buy a cheaper set that features the game disc and characters. If you buy the software on its own (digitally or via disc) you won’t be able to play the main game without the playset piece or a character toy. Create your own story and play through experiences as characters from the Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy universes, as they come to life by placing their Figures on the Disney Infinity Base. You can even use your original Disney Infinity Figures and Power Discs in Toy Box Mode in Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes. If you know what your getting yourself into with the Figures to play setup of this game, much like Skylanders or the soon to be released Lego Dimensions, it is a wonderful game. This is not a "hardcore" gamers game although, they too could find some fun with it. This is a family game at it's core. It is easily accessible to the younger crowd and very forgiving in it's method of game play. The game would have followed multiple plots, with a different one in each Play Set, like its predecessors.

System Requirements

Disney Infinity 4.0 would have followed the set up of the series previous installments. However, two new features were to be introduced in 4.0 that would have changed the way the game worked; a Toy Box Story Mode (see below) and the long-awaited update of all 1.0 and 2.0 playable characters' skill trees and move sets to be updated with the 3.0 mechanics. Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars Rise Against the Empire Play: Gives you access to the game and The Rise Against the Empire adventure.

All Disney Infinity Figures, Disney Infinity Power Discs and Disney Infinity 3.0 Play sets work with the Disney Infinity 3.0 Video Game Software. Disney Infinity 3.0 is the third major set to arrive from Disney featuring a mix of toys and game that interact with each other. While this new trend (started by Activision’s Skylanders) is a fantastic idea that kids and adults love, it can also prove expensive and confusing as new toys and sets are released that only work with certain versions of the game.

Bases are also cross compatible on most consoles, but not for Xbox 360 or Xbox One. The Wii, Wii U, PS3 and PS4 bases will all work on these machines. The Xbox 360 base will only work on that console and that goes for the Xbox One base.
