About this deal

So I have a friend of mine who is a painter and she's awesome. We were talking just about the creative process and I was going into a new project and I said, "I'm taking myself away." I was going to just fly across the country. Josh is going to be in New York. I was going to be in LA for a while to just kind of get into it. Doubt that you have what it takes to bring your creative vision to life? Grace Bonney’s In the Company of Women may be the inspiration you need.

This book was not for me. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, I just didn't find the content as a whole to be helpful for me. That doesn't mean it won't work for others. I do think that approaching life with the idea that "everything is figureoutable" is a good perspective but there are some circumstances/situations that people cannot figure their way out of and their circumstances must be changed systematically. For every person that overcomes some seemingly impossible circumstance, there are others who are left behind. Yes, some of them would have accepted their circumstances and may not have really tried to overcome but there are others who will try as best as they can and will still fail and fail again. For them, everything is not figureoutable. Lisa Gibbons talks her books. Tom Hanks in the car. He's talking into a Dictaphone. He says he takes that Dictaphone with him everywhere he goes, because the ideas are constant. So I just think you have to know how you best work and then set yourself up in your life up for creating in that space. But something makes me a lot smarter when I commit. Something gives me a lot more inspiration when I commit and everything flows better when I commit. I think the muse, again, no matter what it is, goes, "Yeah, just not taking it that seriously." So neither am I. That's number one. The biggest surprise I've had overall through all of this has been how much writing heals. When I was working on the precursor to Beautiful Writers was my divorce memoir, which I never published. It was called My Midlife Mess.

Marie Forleo: One of my earliest memories was when I was about four years old. I was sitting in the grammar school library in Iselin, New Jersey on the floor, surrounded by piles of books. My mom was volunteering for my older brother’s class and the kindergarten teacher, her name was Mrs. Krusin, was keeping an eye on me. I remember feeling intoxicated by that special smell of books that libraries always have and just feeling mesmerized by it all. I felt like every book was this window into an entirely different universe, and I would trace the words and the pictures with my fingers working so hard to figure out what it all meant.

Everything Is Figureoutable

Marie: Oh, absolutely, Charlene. In fact, you should take the free seven-day writing class that we’re offering right now at thecopycure.com. That state of total absorption in something you love is what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls “flow” — he believes it’s the happiest we ever are.

So, on the heels of all of that and with a new and deeply profound appreciation for the preciousness of life, I am now wrapping up my job (with healthy savings in the bank, mind you) to start off on a new life journey as an artist. Do I know exactly how I'll get there? Not really. But now — more than EVER — I know that I'll figure it out. And I'm thrilled to have your insights and inspiration for my journey into this new chapter. A born-and-raised Jersey girl with nothing more than passion, a laptop and a dream, Marie Forleo has created a socially conscious digital empire that inspires millions across the globe.I’ve since gone on to get a well paying job and run my own business on the side. I have a range of power tools and my very own toolbox to flip a new four-bedroom house by the sea in Ireland. I passed Marie’s mantra on through word and action to my four children. Three of them have flown the coop and are studying law, accountancy, and psychology. They are living and working independently from me without a single loan. Marie’s mantra is their mantra as well as mine and I know they’ll pass it on to their children in the future.

The only part of this book that I found myself really resisting is the chapter on appearance. Obviously, if you go around all smelly and grubby and dressed like a slob, that's plenty resistible. She's clearly right about that. But still, I don't like the advice to dress better and wear makeup. Blech! Well, consciousness is always expanding as is information, right? So all you have to do is talk to a 25-year-old and you go, "Whoa, kids are smarter than we were." At least the kids I'm talking to. Especially in consciousness, in vibration, in expansion. So books are the same. They're written by people. So as we evolve and grow, books do too. I LOVE learning about the lifestyles and philosophies of artists –– how they live, work, dress, and share their ideas with the world –– and this book gives me the opportunity to sit down with 100 different women and learn about their creative processes.”And it was like he was able to see the world through my eyes for the first time. The healing was outrageous. He told me it healed him. I know it healed me. It healed my kid. He was dating somebody at the time and he said, "Can I let her read it?" I said, "Are you crazy? She's going to break up with you." He goes, "I don't care. If she doesn't know the truth. Screw it." He gives it to her, she breaks up with him. I mean, to this day we still laugh about it. Just finding that right turn of phrase or moving something that was at the end to the beginning or shaving something down. It feels to me like one of the most joyful processes ever. Group: Are you mad? Are you upset? Are you sad? Come here, bae. Let me give you a hug because you act like nobody’s showing you love. Jayasri: I’m Jayasri. I’m on the Customer Happiness Team. We really support our customers through B-school, The Copy Cure, life and everything that MarieTV brings forth and people’s hearts.
