We expect actually solving the case and not ending up as an insane drunk to be the non-standard ending. This I think points to a theme of the game - the concept of punishment. For example, how the killer considers himself as punishing society and punishing himself. And how the main character punishes himself a lot for his perceived failures. The punishments of the furies also reflect consequences in the game. Alecto's punishment is the incitement of the madness of war. Megaera punishes with jealous rage. Tisiphone punishes with illness and death.

Harry and his partner are confronted by his old squad upon their return to Martinaise. They reflect on Harry's actions during the game, particularly whether he solved the case and how he handled the mercenaries. Lieutenant Jean Vicquemare, Harry's usual partner, confirms that Harry's emotional breakdown was the result of his fiancé leaving him years ago.
