About this deal

As you get to 70mm, distortion completely disappears, reappearing as pincushion distortion at 105mm all the way to 300mm. Either they could choose a lens covering the popular 70-300mm range designed to cover a full frame sensor, but this would leave a gap between 55mm and 70mm, or they could purchase a superzoom lens covering up to 300mm, but this would often result in a slower maximum aperture at 300mm and compromised optical quality. Unfortunately the lens does not focus internally, extending by a couple of centimetres at close distances. It's light weight should make the lens balance well on Nikon's entry level bodies such as the D40, D60, D3000 or D5000 as well as more advanced bodies such as the D90 or D300 used for testing.

Take a look at the table below comparing features with a selection of other fantastic DX-format lenses in the collection. The 70-300 may be sharper because (extending the reasoning often given for why prime lenses are superior) it is easier to construct a quality lens in a narrower zoom range. You're needs should dictate which is more suitable rather than the performance if you're comparing those two lenses. We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective; so we've included an example and several 100% crops for your perusal. Nikon designed it with a High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element to reduce its size and maintain optimal contrast across its entire zoom range.telephoto zoom lens designed to complement the 18-55mm kit zoom that comes bundled with many cropped-sensor Nikon digital SLR cameras. At or near 300mm image quality decreases, but it's not too bad considering it's an entry level lens. High Refractive Index glass: Glass with a high refractive index (HRI) transmits light more efficiently and works to eliminate spherical aberration, a distortion effect in which the edges of an image can appear less sharp than the centre area. Perfect for travel, sunsets, or sporting shots, the shallow depth of field and dramatic telephoto compression effects achievable also make for a beautiful portrait shot creating a soft background and attractively flattening facial features. The AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm lens may have a lot of plastic parts, but the lens mount is, thankfully, made of metal.

It is put together to fine tolerances and there are no rattles or wobbles anywhere on the lens and the mount is constructed from metal. I'd leave either a 58mm Nikon Clear (NC - UV) filter, or a 58mm Hoya Super HMC UV on the lens at all times. Bokeh, the character of out of focus backgrounds, not simply how far out of focus they are, is beautiful. If I was working in nasty, dirty areas, I'd forget the cap, and use an uncoated 58mm Tiffen UV filter instead. The corners at 70mm look very similar to the 55mm crops posted above, with softer corners wide open getting pretty good by f/8. No third party manufacturer currently produces a lens covering this range on Nikon cameras, so in this scope it is quite unique.
