About this deal

The LITELOK X1 uses Barronium, a patented anti-grinder technology that contains tiny ceramic particles. Out of the box, the FS 500 felt sturdier than my three-year-old X-Plus 6500, and after testing, I found that the FS 500 offered increased usability. And because of their comparatively complex build, I have some doubts about how well they’ll continue to perform after a thief has tried (and failed) to defeat them. Now there’s nothing wrong with this per se. But I have doubts about both the quality of the steel and the mechanisms. Bikes left for long periods at train stations are particularly at risk, so you’re probably right to be concerned, Phil!

If you’re looking for the most secure chain possible, keep reading. I cover the best and strongest (stationary) bike chain later in this list. The Fahgettaboudit uses higher-quality materials than the OnGuard Brute, which justifies its more expensive price. If you can afford the extra money, the Fahgettaboudit will last you longer. And that makes a big difference when you’re carrying it about and even trying to get it round your bike. The 70 cm of internal space is more than enough for me in the vast majority of situations. Before using the Compact, I used the ABUS Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500, which is slightly more secure, offering the Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Gold rating. I’d recommend the Kryptonite New York Legend 1515 to anyone who needs a super-secure chain for their bike shed or garage.

So how do you choose between them? Let's take a look at three of the most popular brands... Abus vs Kryptonite vs OnGuard So if you’ve been wondering whether the Forever is secure enough for your bike or worth the price tag, keep reading, and I’ll let you know!

Having said that, the Legend has 15 mm links which although theoretically crop-able, are very unlikely to be cut by even the biggest bolt cutters. Such croppers would also need to be wielded by a heavy man who knows exactly what they’re doing!Your rear wheel is usually the second most expensive component on your bike, so this takes priority over the front wheel. The Forever also uses an automatic keyhole cover that slides shut when the key is removed from the cylinder. Whereas, if a thief can cut a hole in your fence, with a bit of help, they could maybe carry all 4 bikes out without having to cut anything else. It’s difficult for me to make a judgement here as I don’t know what your fence is like or how big/heavy your bikes are. If you manage to lose both keys supplied with the Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500, you’ll be able to get replacements cut using ABUS’ key replacement scheme. It's worth remembering that Sold Secure base their testing criteria on inside information from the police and insurers on the techniques that thieves are actually using in the streets.

A ground anchor means the chain is closer to the ground which makes it more vulnerable to bolt cutters for sure. I learned the hard way, but surely it’s better to get it right first time! Frequently Asked Questions I use the Kryptonite Kryptoflex every time I leave my bike secured in a busy public area and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. I was extremely impressed with the feel and build quality of the FS 500, it’s designed to last and is built from top quality materials. But it’s eye-wateringly expensive. It’s also a lot heaver than the Litelok X1, it doesn’t come with a frame mount for easy transport, and it’s significantly smaller, which means it may not be suitable for many cyclists. If you ride an e-bike or a bike that’s going to attract attention from thieves, I’d recommend the LITELOK X1 over this, otherwise, the Fahgettaboudit retails for roughly half the price of the X1, so is a better option for those with a tighter budget. I’ve used the Fahgettaboudit Mini for the last three years with my bike and although my bike was relatively expensive, no one’s ever tried anything funny.
