Mark Laita was born and raised in the Midwest Cities of Detroit Chicago in 1960. He found his love for photography there at the age of fifteen. During Mark’s 2020 interview with the Whitaker family, we see him interact with Lorraine, Ray, and Timmy. The three can’t offer coherent answers as they have an undiagnosed mental condition. In an episode with podcaster Joe Rogan, Soft White Underbelly host Mark Laita explained how he discovered the Whittaker family while exploring Raleigh County in 2004. Laita noted in the episode that due to the Whittakers' popularity in the area, a Raleigh County sheriff's deputy referred him to the Whittakers while he was searching for "interesting people" around the area to photograph for his upcoming book, Created Equal, which was released in 2008. In 1999, Mark Laita began his journey documenting the varied and iconic American archetypes. In the spirit of Edward Curtis, August Sander and Richard Avedon, Laita's survey of "human types" is an extension and a new interpretation of their past photographic methodology. Laita's subjects were usually found by simply showing up in a city or town and looking for someone interesting to photograph. Ultimately, it was through conversations with auto mechanics, barbers, or police officers that led to some serendipitous meeting where a bootlegger, farmer, or pimp was unearthed.
