About this deal

One spectacular recipe for Bols Genever is from David Wondrich’s book Punch called “Hot Bols Genever Punch.“ There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray's crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price.

In 1575 the Bols family opened their distillery t Lootsje ( the little shed) in Amsterdam. The distillery was located outside the city walls on the post road to Haarlem, situated next to a stream. By 1612 the city's walls had expanded to encompass the distillery, and the stream was dug out into a canal called the Rozengracht because of rose nurseries in the area. Around the same time, a new stone building was constructed to house the distillery. The first official mention is in 1640 in Amsterdam town papers, where Pieter Jacobszoon Bols is documented as operator of t Lootsje on the Rozengracht. Bols Genever is distilled from a malt wine grain base composed of wheat, rye and corn that were fermented alongside juniper berries. 22(!) botanicals are present in total. It is is then rested in oak for a minimum of eighteen months before bottling. Tasting Notes This is a double-distilled gin produced in a two-stage distillate . Juniper, coriander, angelica, licorice root, cassia bark, Florentine iris, and lime peel are introduced in the first distillation. Bitter orange peel, lemon peel, and lime peel in the second. It is finished with Icelandic glacial water and bottled at a standard 40 percent ABV (80 proof).Additionally, juniper is diuretic, which means that it helps flush out bacteria and toxins in your system. As it can also help with stomach acid production, it can even help as a digestif. Gluten, Carbs, & Calories In Jenever

The Bols genever recipe was recreated in 1820 using a complex mix of botanicals. And while its barrel-aged genever launched internationally in 2010, Bols started resting genever on oak – French Limousin oak, to be exact – in 1883. By the way, genever is not the same as gin Red Orange liqueur. A bright red, sweet blend of citrus and tropical fruit such as passion fruit and peach.

At the time, distillation was not permitted in the centre of Amsterdam, due to the fire risks associated with operating a still amongst Amsterdam’s predominantly wooden buildings, so Bols set up its still on the outskirts of the city on the bank of a stream, so the abundant cold water could be used for cooling the condensing column. The still sat under a simple roof with a small wooden building for storing botanicals. The distillery was known as ‘t Lootsje’, a Dutch expression which translates as ‘the little shed’. Bols has constructed a "brand experience" in Amsterdam, which includes not only a traditional museum of the history of the brand, its manufacturing methods and ingredients, but also various interactive exhibits which involve the visitor and engage the senses. Visitors can even practice flair bartending. If you enjoy the standard bottle of Beefeater, keep an eye out for the brand's special bottlings. They make an appearance from time to time, and each is worth a taste when the bottle crosses yourpath. Beefeater 24, for example, is a regular offering that is a nice upgrade from the original and the brand often comes out with limited editions. Furthermore, juniper has anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Therefore, jenever can be used to help with coughs and sore throats, especially when used in combination with other herbs. For instance, ginger can be an excellent addition when using jenever as a remedy. Bols has a line of internationally shipped vodka, flavored vodkas, gin, and genever. As noted above, in Eastern Europe, the Bols brand is produced and marketed by another entity, CEDC. Whatever the type of jenever, the process will consist of at least two distillates. The first one is a triple-distillation similar to whisky. The chosen ingredients is the deciding factor of what type of jenever is being made. For instance, a predominantly malt grain distillate will result in Oude Jenever.Martin Miller's is a modern take on traditional gin. It has that wonderful juniper dominance of a London dry and it is perfectly balanced, crisp, clean and simply an extravagant gin.
