About this deal

The removal of peat composts to more organic based composts has been a positive move for the environment, but the new organic based composts do also attract more Fungus Fly, which enjoy feeding on organic matter. This has led to a general increase in the activity of this particular pests for many people growing house plants. Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner.

The nematodes can travel through the moist soil and locate the fungus gnat larvae. They then burrow inside and reproduce, killing the larvae and creating more nematodes to hunt down more larvae until none are left. Once the larvae are gone, the nematodes have no prey and naturally die out. This predatory mite is similar to Hypoaspis species but larger. It can occur naturally in glasshouses and became available in 2010. Like Hypoaspis spp. , Macrocheles prefers moist soil compost with a loose structure and temperatures of 15°C or above. The mites feed on sciarid eggs, larvae and pupae.Sciarid fly (also known as compost fly) or Fungus Gnats are a common pest of greenhouse plants in the spring. You may be interested in some of the other trials I have conducted: Terrarium, Vivarium, and Orchidarium Trials Fungus gnats, also known as sciarid flies, affect all types of plants including flowers, fruits and vegetables. They especially love indoor or greenhouse plants in pots and containers due to their moist soil and/or humid conditions, and can be very irritating to have flying around inside. While, I applied these biological controls to the compost inside my terrariums just as the lights dimmed. The problem: When growing seedlings or potted plants indoors and in glasshouses the damp soil needed for healthy plants can often be a home to sciarid fly larvae. These larvae can damage the plants and also transmit diseases to them. Additionally, when they develop into adults, the sciarid flies are a nuisance.

If applying with a hose end sprayer, mix with water and add to the applicator. Apply evenly over area to be treated.Sciarid Zoot Off Granules – Stop Sciarid Flies laying their eggs in your pots / containers / seed trays by adding a layer of Sciarid Zoot Off to the surface of your compost – layer should be at least 1cm deep. It can be spread around established plants or applied after seeds have been sown and the seedlings will germinate through the dressing. This new granular product is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried left-overs from making organic olive oil) with an added volcanic mineral. Sciarid Zoot Off is made out of natural / non-toxic ingredients, is attractive in appearance, fragrant, biodegradable, safe to use and is totally safe for pets and wildlife. Available in 1.7kg bags, each bag will cover 1.2 sqm. How it works :- Hypoaspis mites are a great solution, they are hard working, crawling over the compost to find their prey. They are fine in dryer conditions don't need lots of compost to live in. They can work well as a preventative measure to stop new outbreaks as they have a reputation of living for quite a long time without food (when they have been previously fed). Maybe even giving you protection for a few months. Young bedding plants, especially bizzie-lizzies, can be affected with large numbers of small flies covering young plants, whilst larvae eat the roots. The product: Beneficial nematodes are naturally occurring micro-scopic worms which move through the soil to hunt sciarid fly larvae, infect them and then once inside kill them.

Apply to one third of the area to be treated through a coarse rose. Then repeat the above two steps until all product is used.Killing fungus gnats off for good is difficult since each female lays around 150 eggs in their short lifetime. Fungus gnat numbers grow exponentially, and once set in can be hard to eradicate completely. Traps A lso known as fungus gnats, sciarid fly are one of the most common pest species we observe most notably within interior settings. Sciarid's have the potential to be very damaging to plants, with the larvae doing most of the damage to roots. With a rapid lifecycle exacerbated within interior heated environments allow populations to increase dramatically at times.

I find flies and other insects very interesting indeed, while they’re outside, but I must confess that I find sciarid flies really rather off putting inside. These irritating flies don’t add anything positive to the ambiance of my home, so I am always keen to prevent sciarid flies from becoming a nuisance. The lifecycle of the Sciarid fly Fungus Fly Larvae feed on plant roots, and are capable of killing young plants if left untreated. Overwatering Plants Can Lead To Infestations Growers must hold a paper or electronic copy of the current EAMU before using any product under the EAMU arrangements. Any use of a pesticide with a EAMU is at grower’s own risk. Relevant EAMUs are sent to HDC members by HDC, or are available from CRD (see above) or from consultants.Sciarid flies can occur all year round on protected herbs, especially in warm, moist conditions e.g. in propagation houses. However, they are more of a problem in spring and summer, when warm temperatures allow faster increase in numbers, especially when more frequent watering is needed, which favours development of the pest. The development time from egg to adult is around three weeks at 21°C, but faster at higher temperatures e.g. only 17 days at 25°C. The adults, although weak fliers, can fly from infested areas to newly emerged seedlings or young cuttings. Integrated Pest Management (protected herbs) Cultural control
