About this deal

London's Young Entrepreneur of the Year (NatWest GBEA) and founder of sustainable style brand TALA and fitness tech brand Shreddy, Grace Beverley is a successful female entrepreneur shaking up the business world, with a global digital reach of over 1. This naturally gives a privileged position to her perspective, yet she suggests we all have vastly different experiences of work and her privileges are not lost on her. There's a lot of that that we've internalised from different industries, and I think that can be really, really harmful.

in this week's solo episode we're looking at how to stand out from a job application alone - from the POV of someone who's been going through application after application! There was nothing I hadn’t either already learnt elsewhere or already did due to common sense (such as keeping a to-do list and using the calendar on my phone). podcast which breaks down the world’s issues in an easy way to guide everyone towards action together. The author’s blurb sounded impressive (which got me interested) however after a some basic internet digging, the blurb is an exaggerated white lie!In 2021, she was praised for an ASOS campaign where she modelled for ASOS’ earrings wearing the implant and became a figurehead in the deaf community. Knowing what I do about Grace, it’s hard to understand where she is coming from when she herself perpetuates the concepts and “cultures” she is trying to pull people away from. I had no idea who Grace Beverly was and overall I was pretty clueless about the book's contents or its target audience when I started reading it.

I was going to give this 3 stars but ultimately realised that after finishing each chapter, I didn’t even feel as though I’d absorbed anything particularly valuable or coherent. I‘m never going to feel successful unless I define what success is for me, and if I never feel successful, I‘ll never be successful. If she wrote about how to be a successful influencer, I wouldn’t have bought her book but at least it would be authentic. Ferris sums up the concept of effectiveness by giving it the succinct qualifier of ‘doing the things that get you closer to your goals’. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this book and it's fresh take on working in a more fulfilled and humane way. Along with her fearless attitude, Mikaela has been hailed as a leading influencer in the climate change crisis, in 2019 she even took the government to court for using taxpayers money to fund North Sea oil and gas companies supported by the environmental non profit Uplift and the Paid to Pollute campaign.
