About this deal

In principle, bothies are open all year round without restriction. However, sometimes the bothy you turn up at may be closed. One of the Inverarish Forest walks, this hike up to Temptation Hill offers some of the best views on the island for the least effort. The trail is well signed (you’ll need to be following the red path) and the walk is usually included on the complimentary tourist information leaflets available at the ferry terminal. It is starting to feel like this thread was started because a few people have a bee in their bonnets about the existence of the Bothy Bible, and the fact that the MBA logo is on it. A traverse of Corbetts Beinn a’ Chumhainn (903m), and Sgòr Choinnich (929m) and Sgòr Gaibhre (955m) is another fine round.

If this thread has achieved one thing above all others it will have put people off getting involved in the MBA. If it had as big a readership it would probably do more damage than has allegedly been done by the evil book. The closure by the estate is due to information in the Bothy Bible that tells people to drive down a private road and park and subsequent massively increased use due to a commercial guidebook. The estate were not consulted by the author prior or since publication. Call it what you will, but the root cause is undoubtedly bothy commercialisation i.e. without the Bothy Bible these problems would not have arisen. I'm sure that such bothy commercialisation will manifest itself in many different ways but the root cause will remain the same: bothy commercialisation. I'm aware of other bothies facing similar problems where owners have raised concerns to the MBA, it is just that these other cases have not 'developed' into closures or other sanctions, yet. So what you have achieved there is - the MBA loses thousands of pounds but it is able to sit on the moral high ground judging and criticising all others (which appears to be a common theme) who are not as squeaky clean as themselves. Basically achieving nothing possibly less than nothing. Four fairly straightforward demands. I look forward to seeing them put forward as motions and debated and voted on at the next AGM. Can't think why this hasn't happened before. (Actually I can.)

Greenskyes Bothy

For the final 18 months of the book project, Geoff devoted all his time to writing and further research. And the result is a beautiful and highly detailed book that offers both a comprehensive guide to 104 bothies and a coffee table attraction. And yes, it does seem that a sign ought to have been the simplest solution all round. I understand signs are now to be erected, but find it strange that this approach was not tried first if the parking directions in just one book really were the problem. Notwithstanding that the Estate decided on the closure period and could not be persuaded otherwise. This is why we publicise the work of the association and why we’re on social media now,” says Stewart. The most recent newsletter reveals that unsuccessful approaches have been made to groups of Scouts and members of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. “I think these days it’s more difficult,” says Barton. “It was easy enough for me. I had a job where you worked 9-5 and you could plan time off and knew you would get it. These kind of jobs don’t exist so much now.” The view of Loch Glencoul is the reason this bothy tops the list of best mountain bothies in Scotland! Unfortunately, over recent years the shelter has gained in popularity, perhaps a little to its cost. There are few days in the summer months when a tent is not pitched within view of the bothy door, and the accumulation of rubbish is a continual problem. Although you are unlikely to get the place to yourself, Sourlies’ particular brand of west-coast magic is irresistible and will draw you in time and again. Try to visit out of season, when spending time here feels like a real privilege.

In principle, there is no reason you can’t camp outside a bothy, and you may well have to if there is no space inside. Getting away from the midges or using the fire are good reasons to camp near a bothy. I guess you get to borrow their spade, too. Are there any bothies in England? Bothies are fairly basic shelters- so don’t expect mattresses, showers, or toilets- but that is all part of the charm of bothies. They are maintained by the Mountain Bothy Association [also known as the MBA], but it’s expected that guests staying will do their part to ensure the bothy stays clean and tidy for the next lot of visitors. The Bothy Code: What to know before you go

A correction to the suggestion that bothies were secret in the nineties and the hinted at implication that the SBB has somehow done hill goers as service in providing locations:

I normally advocate a leave no trace policy for wild camping, but in a bothy I suggest you do leave a record of your stay, in that the place is now cleaner and tidier. You’ll generally find a brush and dustpan, so use it.

An Cladach to be closed due to Bothy Bible

But with the information officially in the public domain I realised there was a gap in the market for a detailed guide.” Geoff the perfectionist One of the most important things to know about the Isle of Raasay is that it sees far fewer visitors than neighbouring Skye. As such, there is much less infrastructure and fewer accommodation options. If you’re planning your visit and wondering where you should stay on Raasay, these are your main options. If you don’t mind roughing it, there is also the ability to wild camp pretty much anywhere on the island. Make sure you bring a sleeping mat that will insulate you from the ground and keep you comfortable. Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. There is a certain mystical quality associated with Maol Bhuidhe, a lonesome homestead which lies in the heart of the remote, roadless territory between Glen Carron and Glen Shiel.
