About this deal

I saw the plot twist the moment the revelation occurred (it was dark & I hated it! & not the guilty pleasure, secretly-loving sort of thing! downright hate that I was wondering about lowering my rate, but in general I liked the book, so... let's be fair) I can happily say things aren't being too dragged out, we're starting to learn Katherine's plan, more of Harley's past and we actually meet Katherine. I was worried that we wouldn't see our bad guy and would continue lurking in the shadows forever a looming figure. She's actually pretty fun and I really like her, she's at that point of crazy where she's more annoyed that Harley got her dress dirty. I'm looking forward to Katherine becoming part of the story.

The Character-building - Other than Wade (the love interest, which was laughably obvious from his intro) I couldn't connect to ANYONE in the book, including our MC. The writer here essentially told us this not a "good school clique" vs. "bad school clique" thing but something more "complicated", a dynamic that she promptly forgets to demonstrate anywhere and went on to ignore completely for the rest of the book. It is what it is, Harley. This thing is going right into a junkyard. Get over it and worry more about why there are gargoyles following you around in the first place.” Lastly, to market this book as a must-read for HP fans and liken it to that level of fiction is outrageous! While there are similarities in concept, clearly the author was inspired by JK Rowling and perhaps even Lev Grossman, it not anywhere close to the level of craftsmanship displayed in “Harry Potter”, “The Magicians”, or even “Twilight” (and I thought that series was poorly written). Whoever Bella Forrest is I think it would behoove her to focus more on the Quality of the stories she wants to tell and not the Quanity of books she’s pumping out. Bella Forrest enjoys offering advice to those who are aspiring to be authors. She encourages them to continue reading in their spare time; books inside and outside of the writer’s genre can give a raw outlook and arouse fresh thoughts for new advancements in the up and coming novel. Forrest recommends studying another language to expand an author’s understanding of grammar and their grasp on their native language. She also urges prospective authors to set a minimum amount of time devoted solely to writing every day.

Well I did like the premise of this story, but I had a few peeves with the characters that kept this from being a 4 star read. Harley’s most important characteristics, which make her a very sympathetic protagonist, are: compassion, courage, and enough conviction in her mission that she never gives up or sits on the sidelines. This is true of Santana as well, though, right from the first, it is obvious that, of the whole team, including Wade, Harley potentially has the most magical power of any of them. This book comes with additional politics and different POVs, which makes it even more enjoyable. Things also get a bit darker, and Harley has to step up for all the people looking up to her. It is fun interacting with all the characters in the first book and meeting new ones. You will get angry at the incompetence of those supposed to protect the kids from the Ryder twins while appreciating Harley for all her efforts. It is also refreshing to see that Garret and Wage are starting to resolve their past issues. Hopefully, these two will be able to work together in the future. Harley's magical powers include Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Telekinesis, Empathy (she can read people's emotions), Reverse Empathy (she can make others feel whatever emotion she wants them to feel), Bestial abilities (she can control Purge beasts), and she can read unfinished Grimoires. Having all four elements is very rare and makes Harley very powerful. Her Primus Anglicus blood makes her even more powerful than an Atlantean, and very important for the balance of Chaos. With the help of Wade and her new friends, she must figure out who the traitor is and why they're targeting her... Before the human and magical worlds dangerously collide.

I really hope that in the new series Finch and Harley's children will be looking after each other in what they get up to! And I wonder whether Saskia got added to the disgraced list same as her sister...

Second, there are quite a few excess coordinate commas, and a good few vocabulary issues - homonym errors (like diffuse/defuse); wrong word choices for what the author means (like "conscience" when she means "consciousness"); and one of my pet hates, the jargon "going forward" repeatedly used to mean "in future" or "from now on". The Persie Merlin series is definitely my favorite series of the 3. I thoroughly enjoyed Harley Merlin and all her adventures, friends and even her enemies. Reading the Finch Merlin stories was sort-of okay, but by the end of that series I was ready to move on. I almost decided not to get Book 18, the first of the Persie Merlin series. So delighted I decided to see what Harley's children were like. Harley Merlin used to be in an orphanage. She went from foster home to foster home, but got treated very badly in each one, and also in the schools she went to. Because of her magical abilities and the fact that she was an orphan, people called her a "freak". rather than the author’s writing style, the plot or the characters that tanked this for me. Let me explain. The Writing Style - After about 50% into the book it stopped bothering me because the plot was engaging but it seriously bothered me until then. It's clumsy and lazy.

I love their humour which had me laughing out loud at times. Whilst I love them and their motley crew, the same can't be said about that humongous pain in the ass Davin! Honestly as a HP fan I didn't think there'd ever be a character I hated more than Umbridge, but Davin definitely gives her a run for her money! I honestly felt myself sharing Finch's fury at how often that asswipe, as Finch would call him, managed to get the better of them! When a rogue 19-year-old witch is recruited to help guard an ancient magical Bestiary, a breath-stealing journey begins... Harley Merlin can sense people’s emotions, among other things. It’s how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. The characters, diverse group of “looser/underdog” friends of the main character had so much potential, but they seem very flat and nondescript.World-building - There wasn't much to begin with. It's not exactly a radical idea. Secret society, keeping magic from the world for their and its own good. The Harry Potter influence is actually quite heavy, there are scenes which literally feel like a retelling. It's not completely off-putting though. Some of it I even enjoyed. The suppressor thing is ridiculous. Harley is so OP at this point, I'm not sure the story can even continue once it gets removed, which it sounds like the books are warming up to. Plus, I found myself more invested in Santana and Rafe than Harley and Wade. At least Santana has some gumption, ya know? And her byplay with the djinn (this was an audiobook so I'd butcher his name if I tried to guess the spelling) was a lot of fun. I liked how she doesn't shy away from that side of Rafe. As for Harley and Wade, I mean obviously there's interest there, but it's moving so slowly it's hard to care about it. Especially since it doesn't seem like I have enough of the series to actually see them get together. And on that note... Harley and her teammates are dedicated to halting Katherine’s terrifying goal of obtaining godlike power and enslaving the whole world. Their current crucial, intermediate mission in that regard is to rescue dozens of magical children whom Katherine has kidnapped for her nefarious ends, and who continue to be missing, in spite of attempts to rescue them that began in Book 2. There’s a traitor lurking within the SDC who clearly must be a shapeshifter, which puts all shapeshifters under suspicion, including Garrett. In addition, Holly yearns to gain access to her parents’ Grimoire, a magical spellbook, which she learns is located in the New York Coven which, before their deaths, her parents were head of. Holly also has learned that she has had a device called a Suppressor implanted inside her body since infancy which is suppressing her magical powers. She wants to get it removed, but the process is difficult to achieve and quite dangerous. I did expect a bit more in the way of things feeling more tense and fraught, the magical council is starting to take more notice of the San Diego coven in light of everything that's happened and decide to leave two agents to oversee the investigation into the missing kids. Oh, and there's still a spy lurking in the coven. This was nothing like Harry Potter. It felt nothing like it. However, I knew going into it that it wasn't going to be, so I didn't have those expectations. Besides the extreme lie in advertising, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I decided to read this book because I love Bella Forrest's other series (you know, the guilty pleasure vampire one ;) ) But this one felt very different. It felt more YA and more mature. I haven't read Forrest's other series in a while, but it definitely seems like her writing and plotting has improved a lot.
