About this deal

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it just doesn’t really feel like a board game version of the video games. There are four different roles in XCOM: The Board Game, so it's ideally suited to playing with the full player count, although if you don’t mind playing with multiple roles, the game could be played with one, two, three or four players and most often we actually play this as a couple, taking on two roles each.

The resolution phase has players roll dice to see if their efforts during the timed phase were enough to hold back the bad guys. These tasks include handling the budget, drawing cards, and putting soldiers and alien spacecraft on the board. From one to four players step into the the roles of XCOM Commander, Chief Scientist, Central Officer and Squad Leader, each of which is responsible for a particular section of top-level decision making: The Commander controls the budget and decides where to launch interceptors, for instance, while the Squad Leader assembles strike teams and assigns soldiers to defend the base.

Each task has a threat level that starts at “1,” and even as you roll your pool of blue XCOM dice, you roll a single red enemy die. In the end, XCOM needs boots on the ground to confront the alien invaders, and it’s the Squad Leader’s job to ensure that the right troops are tackling the right missions. In 2005, Codo Technologies and publisher Namco also released Rebelstar: Tactical Command, a Game Boy Advance turn-based tactical role-playing game that too was reminiscent of the early Battlescape system. The follow-up game, UFO2Extraterrestrials: Shadows over Earth was originally supposed to be released in Q4 of 2012, but as of 2021 has no official release date.

Firaxis Games, XCOM, and their respective logos are trademarks of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. In September 2008, UFO: Enemy Unknown, Apocalypse, Interceptor and Enforcer were also re-released as downloadable titles.
