Index Astartes III, "Chosen of Khorne - The World Eaters Space Marine Legion", "The Lost and the Damned - The Death Guard Space Marine Legion", "Masters of Forbidden Knowledge - The Thousand Sons Space Marine Legion" After solar days of bombardment, the Traitor Legions landed on the surface of Terra in Drop Pods and advanced on the two spaceports nearest the location of the Imperial Palace to secure them in preparation for the main landings of the Traitor forces. The two took to the air, trading blows and battle cries high above the heads of the two forces. Already fatigued from the siege, Sanguinius was cast down by the daemon, pulverising the concrete below upon impact. The Loyalist forces seemed to collectively groan. There was a conscious choice to dial down the scale, to get more intimate,” explains Aaron. “We’ve had global conflict in several books now, so with Echoes of Eternity , the focus lasered in on what it was like to be part of the long retreat to the Delphic Battlement – the very battlements of the Sanctum Imperialis.”

I don't know who this book is for, which could be said for the siege of terra series in its entirety. The Siege of Terra will detail the final events of the Horus Heresy, most notably the eponymous Siege of Terra and the final duel between Horus Lupercal and the Emperor of Mankind. At dawn Jaghatai's lightning raid caught the Traitor garrison at the spaceport completely by surprise, and reclaimed the spaceport for the Imperium. Word Bearers - Commanded by Zardu Layak [16]. Unknown numbers of additional Word Bearers seemed to arrive during the battle, such as those of the Osseous Throne led by Inzar Taerus [22] The set pieces, including two Sanguinius-focussed duels and an additional Primarch vs Primarch encounter are rip-roaring action spectacles crying out for the attention of bold, ambitious and incredibly well-funded screenwriters, but at the heart of the novel is the relationship between Sanguinius and his sons. The Blood Angels Primarch plays the roles of father, war leader, politician and figurehead, always excelling yet, unlike many of his brothers, always remaining likeable and relatable.

For all the complaints Gav Thorpe's The First Wall received for its three-plotline structure, where folks would find one of them superfluous, I feel like a lot of pieces of Echoes of Eternity would be subject to similar criticisms. The star of the show is definitely the Great Angel though, despite ADB being deliberately careful with the application of Sanguinius’ actual “screentime”. Fully half of the novel goes by without him showing up, and even afterwards ADB restrains himself to use the Angel only sparingly in chosen scenes, seldom from his own PoV and mostly through the eyes of worshippers, allies and enemies. Sanguinius has always been set up for tragedy; even most readers only passingly familiar with the lore of 40k and the Space Marines of the Angel’s lineage are aware of the cruel fate that awaits him at the conclusion of the Heresy on board the Vengeful Spirit. One task of the Horus Heresy was setting up this eventual tragedy so Sanguinius' sacrifice would have an appropriately emotional impact. To be honest, for me the Heresy series so far had not always done the best job with his; despite strong exceptions, I often had the sense of just being *told* why Sanguinius was “beloved by all” - I didn’t really feel it. This got better with the latter novels of the series, but if Echoes excelled at one thing, it was *showing* a Sanguinius that I deeply care about. The myriad battles of the Siege of Terra series are pulling into a taut weave of tension, horror, and certain doom. Just when you thought it was bad, it gets worse.

Like its immediate predecessor Warhawk, Echoes is primarily focused on two specific Legions: the World Eaters and the Blood Angels. While the book definitely works as part of the Siege-mini-series, it gets a lot of mileage out of ADB’s previous work on the World Eaters, namely his brilliant Horus Heresy novel Betrayer. Many moments from Echoes feed off the energy of ‘Betrayer’, mostly by continuing the laid-out movements originating during the Heresy to their ugly conclusion or contrasting the broken nobility and tragic vitality of Betrayer’s World Eaters (and associated moments and quotes) with the frenzied, hollowed out, helplessly mad shells that they are by the terminus of the Siege. Representing the XIIth Legion in this novel are Apothecary-turned-Berserker Kargos Bloodspitter as well as Lotara Sarrin, captain of the Legion’s flagship, and of course the tortured might of Angron himself. Lotara’s passages are especially harrowing and sobering, as the proud, fierce woman who used to put Astartes into their place by sheer force of presence has been reduced to a shadow of herself, haunting the mutating ruins of her once-majestic vessel. With the release of Siege of Terra: Echoes of Eternity this weekend, the Warmaster’s forces push forward on Terra, and the epic conflict takes one step closer to its ultimate end. The final moments are now at hand. With the spaceports secured, Horus' remaining troops of the Traitor Legions and their mortal auxilia and Dark Mechanicum support forces landed en masse, and the hulking transports carried thousands of troops each as well as bringing to the battlefield the terrible Chaos Titans that served the Warmaster's cause and had been possessed by the daemonic entities of Chaos. The transports' immense size made them prime targets for Terra's ground-based Defence Lasers. The Imperial Fists maintain it was one of their Terminators who challenged Horus, however some see this as a desperate attempt to lessen their collective guilt stemming from the fact that Rogal Dorn never could participate in the fighting. Most savants now agree that it was probably one of the Legio Custodes who interceded, yet the other stories continue to be told and retold over the whole of the Imperium of Man. The siege of Terra by the Traitor forces of Horus began on the thirteenth day of Secundus with an orbital bombardment by the Warmaster's fleet as the prelude to a ground invasion.

Terra faces more than mortal foes – the Great Angel and the Red Angel are ready to face each other at last. Angron, lord of the World Eaters, has achieved immortality through annihilation – now he leads the armies of the damned in a wrathful tide, destroying all before them as the warp begins its poisonous corruption of Terra’s very soil. The Sky Fortress was used for the defense of the Eternity Gate, not for the retaking of the Lion's Gate Spaceport by Jaghatai Khan. [1d] Facing them were the armies of Chaos under Warmaster Horus which included nine Legions of Chaos Space Marines, traitorous forces of the Imperial Army, Daemonic hordes, and the Titan Legions of the Dark Mechanicum. [1a] Mars, the capital of the Adeptus Mechanicus, had recently fallen to the traitor forces. The situation had become disastrous for the Imperium and the forces of the Emperor. Horus, sensing that he could decisively end the conflict and overthrow the Emperor once and for all, began to move on Terra. Rogal Dorn, of the Imperial Fists, was given overall command of the defenses of humanity's homeworld while the Emperor himself was busy with his own secret project, the Golden Throne. [1a] In addition to the loyalist Space Marine forces deployed in the Sol System, the loyalists were bolstered by the Custodian Guard, Sisters of Silence, millions of Imperial Army troops as well as various Mechanicum forces such as Titan Legions, Knights, Legio Cybernetica, and Skitarii. Much of Terra's population was forcibly conscripted in the stages before the battle, with millions of terrified Conscripts being handed a Lasgun with virtually no training. Most of these were deployed in the 3-layered trench network around the Walls of the Imperial Palace, with Dorn intending to save his Astartes and Mechanicum troops for the later stages of the battle. [9a] These forces were bolstered by elements of the Night Lords and 5,000 Word Bearers commanded by Zardu Layak, as the majority of the Word Bearers Legion remained under the command of the Primarch Lorgar, who had betrayed the Warmaster. The Alpha Legion had retreated from the Sol System warzone after delivering a in-depth map of the Sol System's defences to Horus.

Instead, the Word Bearers still loyal to the Warmaster are led to Terra by the Dark Apostle Zardu Layak. Upon discovering the shields of the Vengeful Spirit down, Malcador the Sigillite alerted the Emperor, still struggling to keep the Golden Throne and its adjoining Webway Gate stable. Upon learning of the news, the Emperor knew it was time to act and end Horus, even though he was certain it was a trap. Rogal Dorn, Sanguinius, Vulkan, and Valdor were all called to his side for the coming battle, and all objected to the Emperor's plan to personally teleport aboard the Vengeful Spirit. [24f] However the Emperor overruled his sons, commanding Valdor and Dorn to come with him while Sanguinius took control of loyalist forces on Terra and Vulkan stay behind to oversee the potential failsafe on the Golden Throne. [24g] Sanguinius flatly objected to his fathers request to stay behind, telling the Emperor of his prophetic death at Horus' hands and his intention to defy fate by defeating his traitorous brother instead. This was enough to move the Emperor to change his mind. Four company's were organized for the assault: the Hetaeron Guard led by the Emperor, another Custodes company under Valdor, a mixed force of Sanguinary Guard and Blood Angels 1st Company under Sanguinius and Raldoron, and Huscarls under Dorn and Diamantis. The operation was codenamed Anabasis. [24h] Malcador took his place upon the Golden Throne in the Emperor's place, an act that would cost him his life. For that, The Emperor renamed Malcador the Sigillite to Malcador the Hero. Rather than assaulting the almost-invincible flanks of the Chaos army, Khan redirected his highly mobile White Scars Space Marines and the surviving Loyalist Tank Divisions of the Imperial Army to Lion's Gate Spaceport. The Blood Angels material here is excellent and I really enjoyed the asides that built on their past, the importance of Sanguinius joining them, and the mirror of their relationship with the World Eaters. I've liked the brief glimpses the previous titles have given me of Sanguinius, but I really liked spending more time seeing him in action and his battle scenes were a ton of fun. I'd say the only parts I felt weren't as strong were the Magnus and Vulkan bits. Important and interesting, but I also felt like we've rehashed the Magnus doing nothing wrong stuff plenty at this point. I did, however, like a couple of Vulkan's stances here that show that, as usual with the Emperor, not all is as it might seem.
