About this deal

Y&Y made it on our list twice, and for good reason. The company makes very high-quality products that are thoughtfully designed and in my opinion are worth the high price point. If cost is an option or if you want to test a pair of belay glasses before springing for a premium brand, these are a safe bet.

Most of the glasses on the market are light enough to not make weight a decision maker, but some are just too heavy. We list the weight for each. Belay glasses are supposed to make belaying easier and more comfortable. These factors are what make them worth buying and using. Although a protective case is definitely worth looking for to ensure they stay safe whilst you are carrying them. If you can take good care of these and are only looking to give an occasional gym belay, they might last long enough to be worth the low cost.

How to Choose the Best Belay Glasses for Your Needs

The simple yet modern design of the metal frame can be adjusted like conventional glasses to fit most faces. Their wide design allows them to be worn with most prescription glasses and sunglasses.

They feel heavy on the head, and multiple testers complained that the frames felt tight. The nosepiece is rigid plastic but felt much less comfortable than that of the Plasfun Evo. How easy is it to take the belay glasses along? How easy is it to get them out and put them away? Do I have everything I need and want along with the glasses?

Lanyard

Overall: Editor’s Choice! These inexpensive belay glasses have a sturdy frame, decent optics and are easy to put on with one hand. This feature is really convenient because it allows the belayer to switch in and out of wearing the belay specs easily with one hand, so they can do this while belaying depending on where the climber is. While it may seem like using belay glasses is intuitive, some basic rules should be followed to ensure the safety of both the climber and the belayer. The lightweight stainless steel design allows for effortless shifting between fields of view as well as allowing for customizable adjustment to fit individual needs.

the peripheral field around the sides of the lenses, allowing the belayer to remain aware of their surroundings. The frames are built from stainless steel. A single plate cradles the prisms and curves into straight, hinge-less arms. A small forked protrusion forms the nosepiece. Given the wide price range of glasses, it’s worth deciding how much you want to spend. If you have the cash, the Y&Y Classic glasses will likely be all you need. If you’re on a budget, it’s hard to beat the Plasfun Firsts. Case & Portability Increases your peripheral vision, which may be helpful when needing to watch your surroundings and the rope you control. The unique design is the first of its kind and Y&Y did an excellent job creating a product that does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and does it well.

Overall: An inexpensive flexible frame option with decent optics that offers the best value of any of the reviewed belay glasses. Like all the flexible frame models they work great over a pair of sunnies. As an accessory, belay glasses can often feel hard to justify the cost if you’re not already feeling the pain. In this case, we think belay glasses are an ideal Birthday or Holiday gift. The adjustment lever itself was very nice to use. The lever movement was incredibly smooth and it doesn’t slip when you stop moving the lever. Available in a variety of colors the Y&Y belay glasses feature a design that looks to be based closely on the original CU glasses. That being said, they’ve made some small changes which has improved upon the old CU design: The thin metal frame was stiffened up and hinges added to the arms. This has really reduced the propensity for the frame to twist and misalign the prisms. The arms and bridge on the Y&Y Classic seem to come straight from a pair of drug store eyeglasses but are comfortable and functional. The arms and nose piece on the Y&Y belay glasses are very reminiscent of drug store eye glasses. A great way to get decent parts at a cheap price.
