About this deal

That’s when I did some more digging, to find an automatic watch that was affordable, looked great and had solid build quality. Thanks for a great, well thought out and honest review. I’ve just found your blog and I’m looking forward to reading more. It has a domed crystal and a case that’s scratched up, and has so much character, in my opinion. What is a Seiko 5? Most all of them feature a relatively prominent ‘5’ badge under the Seiko logo at the top. I used to think the badge was kind of… Over the top. And took up too much dial real estate.

If there’s one problem I could point at here, it’s the action of the day-date display. It’s slow. Very slow. The date mechanism engages at 9 PM, starts switching some time past 11, and completes the switch by just after midnight. The weekday wheel, however, takes longer. It engages before midnight and ends the switch sometime before 4 AM. The Seiko SNXS79 comes on a brushed bracelet with hollow end links, folded links and a stamped clasp. The bracelet feels cheap and sounds rattly, so I promptly swapped it out for a strap instead. While the 19 mm lug width may be odd, I managed to squeeze in a 20 mm leather strap. There are watches, which cost an arm and a leg and offer nothing. They just are, that’s that. There are also watches, which provide the right finishing and specs for the money. And then there are watches, which cost little but offer a ton of the good thing. On the applied hour marker indices and steel hands, you’ll find Seiko’s LumiBrite, which is Seiko’s new luminous material that is said to be brighter and longer lasting than conventional luminous paints. This helps you tell the time even when no light is available. Movement The Seiko SNXS79 is often dubbed the affordable Datejust alternative. It’s easy to see why with its baton markers, clean dial and date window — but make no mistake, the SNXS79 very much posses an identity of its own. Let’s see if the Seiko SNXS79 truly lives up to its reputation as an affordable Datejust alternative.Between this model alone, there’s the SNXS79K1 and SNXS79J1. A Malaysian and Japanese version, respectively. The Malaysian version (K1) has a Spanish day wheel, and the J1 has a Kanji date wheel. The differences end there (aside from the price). SNK355 vs SNXS79K The Seiko SNXS79 is a mechanical automatic watch with movement-case reference 7S26-0480. It houses the 7S26 caliber with 21 jewels, running at 21600 bph with an accuracy of +45/-35 seconds per day. It has a 41 hours power reserve, no hand-winding and no stop seconds hand function. Ref. But if the SNXS79 is your only watch, you might as well get the exact size strap to fit it, which is 19mm.

While the bracelet feels rather light and cheap, I must admit, it’s rather comfortable on the wrist. It doesn’t take much sunlight to charge it, either. Just a few minutes standing in direct sunlight and the lume will be fully charged and ready to go. Seriously, looks amazing. Depending on the region, bracelet model and other features you may find this watch reference written as SNXS79J, SNXS79J1, SNXS79J2, SNXS79K, SNXS79K1, SNXS79K2, SNXS79P, SNXS79P1, SNXS79P2, etc.

Sorry for the late response but WOW, thanks so much for sharing that story! It’s absolutely awesome that your father’s Seiko stood the test of time, though, can’t say I’m entirely surprised! In this review, we’ll be talking about the Seiko SNXS79K’s design, features, movement, price, and its pros and cons to help you decide if it deserves a place on your wrist. Along with the Seagull 1963, it’s the most versatile watch I own. It doesn’t look out of place with any outfit. The first time I owned it, I liked it. But I didn’t love it. At the time, I didn’t have many other watches to compare it to.

This is especially helpful if you already own watches and watch straps with an 18mm width, so you can swap between them.

When it comes to straps such as leather straps, it’s always better to go 1mm up. The leather will still squeeze in no problem, though it may be a bit tight at first. The only caveat, is that you want to make sure you use the correct size spring bars regardless. So for a watch with a 19mm lug width, feel free to use a 20mm leather strap, as long as you have the proper, 19mm springbar. The reason for this is, the leather might squeeze down to the proper size, but a 20mm spring bar will not squeeze down to fit a 19mm lug width. And if it does, you will have a very hard time getting it out. At the time, after wearing a dive watch for a couple of months, I thought the Seiko 5 looked too small and effeminate on me. It is a ‘smaller’ case size (37mm in diameter) and is maybe even smaller than average by modern day standards. Though I’ll must admit, I sometimes still wear the flimsy original bracelet on warmer days. It’s not the best quality, but light and comfortable enough for when it gets really hot out. There are some other options, though.

The Seiko SNXS79 has rather unusual dimensions that, on paper, don’t really reflect how the watch wears. Let me explain. Dimensions The included bracelet isn’t the best, but with a watch so affordable, it’s easy to overlook, and this watch looks good on a variety of different straps if you can work around the odd 19mm lug width.

It has a 37mm diameter like many Seiko 5 models and a very condensed 42mm lug to lug dimension. This means it’ll fit comfortably on most people’s wrists without hanging over the edge, even on those with smaller wrists. We’re glad you dig this post! It only differs from the 1st generation 7S26A in two details: the shape of the rotor has been changed (in the 7S26B), and the previous regulator has been replaced with the slightly more potent Etachron. On paper, it’s nothing special. Not exactly pretty, but not bad.
