About this deal

Overall, the level of PM2.5 in the home while the wood burning stove was burning exceeded the limit for safe exposure set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). As the largest model of the lot, the X Series was easy to load with wood and start the fire. We fit 18- to 20-inch logs into it, laying them across the raised X in the bottom of the pit. This patented design keeps the logs high, allowing air to flow in and feed the fire from the bottom.

Although the pollutants released by wood burning stoves are clearly linked to negative health and environmental outcomes, the actual amount of these pollutants released into your home and the air around it during stove use is currently unclear. Lastly, we let the fires burn down to ash so we could determine how easy clean-up was after the blaze. We also noted things like whether or not the pits were easy to carry or move around, as well as their weight and dimensions. A 2020 study (funded by The Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, The University of Sheffield and The University of Nottingham) found that concentrations of PM2.5 in the home were almost 200% higher than normal when a wood-burning stove is in use.It seemed to radiate a lot of heat out at an angle thanks to the bowl shape and created a warm zone in the shape of an inverted, squat cone, even when the flames weren’t reaching out of the fire pit. When they were, we could feel even more heat radiating straight out from them. Once they were burning, we walked toward each pit until we could feel noticeable heat, then circled them to see how even the distribution was and how much it was affected by wind. We also looked at them through a Flir infrared camera to see if there were any concerning hot spots on the fire pits’ bodies. This means they can be carried around the body and cause damage to other organs. A review of current research has linked to PM to conditions including:

Modern wood burners are also a smarter choice for the environment, producing far fewer emissions than an open fire or older stoves (see Ecodesign Ready below). Moreover, they create a stylish focal point in your room. Why light two fires in two rooms when you can light one for both? That’s the idea behind this double-sided wood burner. It features two glass doors, so wood can be loaded from either side and this also gives it a striking modern see-through design, which is great for open-plan rooms. As you’d expect, it’s fairly sizeable with a heat output of 8kW. While it includes a clever catalyst to help it burn more efficiently and meet Ecodesign Ready specifications, the efficiency is a little lower than some at 75.7%. It includes a carrying case with a drawstring closure at the top—which we love—and is essentially a big bag with handles, which makes it easier to transport. It also keeps ashes from falling out in the car, house, or anywhere we store it. Key specs – Size : 55 x 37.1 x 66.5cm (WDH); Heat output : 7kW; Energy rating : A; Guarantee : LifetimeMost smokeless fire pits burn wood. You’ll want to use seasoned wood—that means it has had time to dry out over six or more months. Wood that’s still green or wet will burn more slowly and may produce smoke even if you use it in a smokeless fire pit. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ A slight disadvantage of the concave shape is that, although we fit 14-inch logs in it, they wouldn’t drop to the bottom. This made it more difficult to fill the fire pit and keep a bigger fire going. For example, they report that figures on domestic wood-burning include pollutants released by open fires and unregulated burning (e.g., barbeques). REMEMBER: For safe effective use always keep chimneys and flueways clear and ensure your appliance has adequate ventilation. A fireguard should always be used with an open fire. For your safety - Never place Instant Light Fire Logs on an already lit fire, or burn more than one at a time - If using your fireplace for the first time, ensure that your chimney is safe for use. Consult a professional chimney sweep if you're in any doubt - Do not break up or poke after lighting. If used in a stove, leave doors open - Always use a fireguard, particularly if there are children present or if the fire is to be left unattended - Keep out of reach of children - Do not breathe fume or vapours - Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources.
