About this deal

This is a DX lens, which means it works perfectly on every DX digital camera from the D40 through the D300, and from the D100 and D1 through the D3.

At the telephoto end results are similar, with the VR again offering about 2 stops of stabilisation, and giving a good chance of getting usable results at shutter speeds as low as 1/13 sec.If your camera is too old, the focus system, even in manual mode, won't work at all, making the lens completely useless with no workaround.

It does not have a “Normal” and “Active” VR switch, which I personally do not miss since I hardly ever change VR from Normal to Active. I tried to shoot insects on my lavender flower bed, and I was quite happy with the ratio of in-focus shots. But this chunky yet competent backpack doesn't have a killer feature or look that makes it stand out from some pretty tough competition. In this review, I will explore the performance characteristics of the latest 18-55mm AF-P VR version in detail and compare it to both older iterations of 18-55mm AF-S VR II and other Nikon lenses, such as the Nikon 18-140mm VR. AF is essentially instantaneous, possibly the fastest focussing Nikkor I own, and it's this fast even on the basic D3300.It's super-sharp, and can give images as good or better than the more expensive 16-85mm and 18-200mm lenses. AF-S Zoom-Nikkor lens is a midrange zoom lens manufactured by Nikon for use on Nikon DX format digital SLR cameras. One can easily lose the previous habit of controlling focus acquisition through the short yet visible and audible refocusing process.

The incorporation of VR technology allows photographers to take substantially sharper pictures at slower shutter speeds than previously possible, and according to Nikon's own specifications, speeds up to three stops slower can be used before the image-degrading blur of camera shake becomes apparent. The AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm VR II lens is engineered to meet the demanding needs of digital photography for brilliant results every time. While the first iterations of the lens (produced from 2005 until 2014) were known for average to poor quality, the newer AF-S VR II generation released in 2014 gained a much better reputation due to solid optical performance in a lightweight body with efficient optical stabilization. It is the only basic zoom with a constant (and fast) aperture – so this lens might be very appealing to sport/action photographers. For less money, the B+W 55mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best. Uses the new Nikon Stepping Motor which is ultra quick and quiet which makes this lens ideal for shooting movies. The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100. The distortion goes away with Distortion Correction ON, and even wide-open the 18-55mm is ultrasharp. Finally, at 55mm sharpness across the frame evens out and it is very good across the frame at maximum aperture.

The more expensive 16-85mm and 18-200mm lenses are different: they have veiling flare as well as ghosts. However, you can achieve shallow depth of field photos when zooming in to 55mm and shooting objects at the closest distance of 25 cm. The wind is blowing, so of course the tops of the palm trees and other plants aren't sharp in this half-minute time-exposure. In the range of 18-55mm, VR doesn't do anything unless you take the camera off its green AUTO setting or turn off the flash to get longer shutter speeds in dim light.MPB will also keep you informed about the status of your gear at every step of the way and the whole process is carbon neutral. The lens performs quite well when the sun is actually within the frame, showing an overall loss of contrast plus a few coloured flare patches even stopped right down to F16. We're as guilty as anyone of getting excited about shiny new gear and features, but let's not lose sight of the gear we already have by our side.
