About this deal

Little Golden Book D106, first edition, hardcover, has previous owner's name/short inscription to inside front cover, slight bumps to spine ends and rear corners, short peel to left edge of spine, some slight edgewear, and slight rubbing, otherwise a solid VG+ copy. The segment about the sword drawn from the stone is only retold — beautifully and emotionally — at the very end of White’s novel.

When Kay learns that The Wart had pulled the sword out of the anvil, he knows that this is the sword which will determine Uther Pendragon’s successor. It floats about, taking little bits of history from here, a legend or two from there, and cobbles them together.I’d forgotten how good it is, funny, deliberately anachronistic (and brilliantly so) and moving at the end.

Arthur’s work with his mentor Merlyn the wizard helps him learn about the world and prepares him to become the legendary King Arthur. At that point in my read-aloud journey and personal reading, I hadn’t read many “hard” books though I was an avid reader. Interesting to read White's 20th century retelling at last after reading so much of the medieval stuff (and just post-medieval). The best bits were featuring King Pellinore, who is a sort of Monty Python knight getting himself wrapped around trees, blinded by his visor and falling off his horse. Golden Kite Honor artist Dennis Nolan has loved The Sword in the Stone since childhood, and he imbues White's tale with magic and mystery in his glowing illustrations. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, please feel free to contribute. Answer: Because Arthur was a nice person and smart, and that’s matter because the king need to be a good person to lead the people. When Kay learns that Wart pulled it from the anvil, he knows it is the sword that will determine Uther Pendragon's successor. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 74% of critics gave positive reviews based on 23 reviews with an average score of 6. Several new characters were introduced in these stories, including Samson Hex, an apprentice of Mim and Magica.

There are several scenes with animation recycled from other Disney films, as well as original animation that itself would be recycled in later productions. Then it occurred to me that I was reading one of the grandparents of modern magical fantasy and very funny in parts, too! Disney Characters introduced in Kingdom Hearts Union χ: Sultan • Samson • Vanellope von Schweetz • Fix-It Felix Jr.Plot Summary: Wart (Arthur) is a young orphan living with Sir Ector and working as a page in medieval Great Britain. The fact that both knights address each other in the most formal medieval English also encourages us to laugh at them. Each man is so heavily padded that he cannot hurt the other—or even see well enough to avoid running into a tree.

White is best known for his sequence of Arthurian novels, The Once and Future King, first published together in 1958. Illustrations such as a tournament with thundering hooves, flying pennants, and lances provide the idea of a medieval joust. The first volume of the Tales of King Arthur series introduces younger readers to the classic story known for over one hundred years as "The Sword in the Stone. In the United States, it was re-issued to theaters on December 22, 1972, and released jointly with Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore on March 25, 1983.

I feel like this was written for a different time and when it was written it revolutionized the Arthurian Myth. The young Arthur depicted here is boyishly loving and kind, deeply honorable and empathetic, brave and stalwart. This was a mostly wholesome tale that includes some history (medieval England), a lot of fantasy (magic and mythological creatures) some difficult-to-understand weirdness (the anachronisms with Merlin's moving backward through time) and a lot of tutorials (delivered in dry Middle English). After traveling the long road to London on horseback, Kay performs brilliantly in the contest, but it's young Arthur himself who ultimately wins the day.
