About this deal

He soon discovers that making a wish you don't mean, especially in a strange, new place you don't yet understand, will introduce you to individuals who will grant it for you, and ensure disastrous consequences for everyone.

Here are some of my favourite sinister faerie worlds from children's books, which all inspired the village of Hallow Fall in my book The Chime Seekers! She is Evie, twelve years old, and they are people inside her dream. Next day, she meets both the cat and Wainwright in real life. And so begins the most magical and dangerous adventure that any child could wish for. We are all creatures of language': Lifetime Achievement Award winner John Agard on his incredible life and career When I started writing Spellstone, one of the things I had to decide was how magic works in the book. Can anyone be a magician? Do you need wands to cast spells? What makes you more or less powerful than another magician? You don’t want to fill your scenes with blood and dead bodies and weapons – but you do want your reader to think about them. Every word should be horrible: the trees shouldn’t be wide, they should be bloated. The sun shouldn’t be hot, it should be blood red. Your characters don’t just walk – they creep, they stumble, they shudder and groan. Don’t just say things are weird or creepy or scary: show what makes them scary. The beautiful cover by David Dean, along with the illustrations within the book, lend a suitably gothic feel to the story. This would make a great book to read aloud, due to the number of cliff-hangers and awful decisions Yianni makes throughout the story. Suitable for upper key stage 2. The Chime Seekers is, I believe, the second book in this world but it does work really well alone. It is essentially a story of a boy who doesn't appreciate the new sibling he is having to tolerate and wishes they would just disappear. The trouble with making wishes in the dark is that sometimes the darkness listens. PDF / EPUB File Name: The_Chime_Seekers_-_Ross_Montgomery.pdf, The_Chime_Seekers_-_Ross_Montgomery.epub

Walker Books would love to see you enjoying the book with children using these great Teachers’ Notes and Discussion Guide. A fantasy story clearly inspired by the movie Labyrinth, this gave me all of the vibes my little goblin heart needed, while still being an utterly original, engrossing story. I loved this so much I ran out and bought a physical copy the very next day, I just needed it in my collection. The winners of the Diverse Book Awards 2023 have been announced, with one winner from each of the four categories announced: Picture book, Children... This amazing planning guide was created by BAY3 student Lauren Green, linking SPACE TORTOISE to a variety of different subjects. Thanks Laura! Heart-stopping fantasy from the Costa-shortlisted and critically acclaimed author of the bestselling The Midnight Guardians.

This book’s plot is so terrific that it’s hard to do it justice in a short summary, but it’s reminiscent of much of the best children’s literature – filled with real stakes, danger, tragedies, and lovable, memorable characters. The villain, Lord Renwin, is truly frightening – Yanni is in a match of wits with the devil, and souls are on the line. The Primary School Library Alliance is calling on the government to match-fund the private investment it has brought into helping primary schools c...

Dark folkloric fantasy worlds feel like a classic mainstay of "kidlit", and it seems like there’s a bit of resurgence: everything from the funny and kaleidoscopic world of Otherland by Louie Stowell, the arrival of Peter Bunzl’s Magicborn next year, and even dark twists in the upcoming Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by Annabel Steadman. Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12...

A quest like no other: Ross Montgomery is on spectacular form in this brilliant, edge-of-your seat story.” Posters and worksheets for THE MIDNIGHT GUARDIANS, including a display cut-out standee! All illustrations by David Dean. I did think that the book's message, that Yanni was just selfish, was wrong. All his parents attention went to his sister, and I felt he was pushed to the wayside in favour of her. After the move, watching his look at her perfectly decorated room when his own room had not even been started on, when all he wanted was to spend a movie night with his Dad, that broke my heart. We can't forget, Yanni is a kid too.

There is something incredibly special about a polar bear": The Last Bear author Hannah Gold on the incredible beasts that inspired her book Amy was also just perfect, a wonderfully nerdy girl who stole my very nerdy heart. She was the perfect yin to Yanni’s yang. Perhaps my favourite though, was Larry. I loved the way that, as the reader, your own thoughts and feelings mirror Yanni’s. At first Larry is terrifying, but gradually you fall in love with the little monster as it becomes clear that he’s just another victim of the big scary villain. How books help you imagine a limitless future: Dapo Adeola on representation, reading and his favourite picture books A collection of lesson plans and resources for a CHRISTMAS DINNER OF SOULS English topic, each one focusing on a different chapter, and eventually leading to a “Write Your Own Tale” extension project!
